Joshua - love your dust storm pic! The guy in it is key for showing perspective. Nicely done!

Michelle, thanks very much! Just FYI, that person is a Swedish lady and not that it matters. I took other shots without her but you are absolutely correct, I like the shot or shots with a person to render some kind of scale/perspective. I have other shots taken with that lens from South Georgia/Falkland Islands but I am sorting through the images right now. I was too trigger happy while there....... .

Thanks again,
Joshua

thank you! hasn't gotten too too cold here yet this year, though last week was pretty gloomy/rainy & there wasn't a lot of light.. but typically until the frost hits, there's always signs of life around if you look hard enough.. those photos were taken on a late-afternoon on a cloudy/overcast day - I probably warmed them up a tiny bit (via white balance) when I was processing the RAWs relative to how the scenes actually looked in person..

Wow, that's crazy! Down in NJ we have had many frosts already and even a 2-14" snow storm (depending upon what part of the state)! (which was all most unfortunate since most of us also had zero heating during all the frosts and snow storms)

I just got a CPS loaner to try out. Also got a new-to-me 1Ds3 yesterday. So, no MA, just the first batch of camera today. Most have little LR4 PP beyond sharpening, CA box checked, and slight exposure reduction. A few have some adjustment of high/shadow as well. Rainy day.

My initial impressions are: Wow! Other than some corner darkening, it seems like I'm using f/2.8 primes through the whole zoom range -- good primes. I'll do more comparisons, including against the original 24-70L, but this does seem to live up to all the positive user claims.

Joshua -- "Slippery" in regards to 1) the rain, 2) having my eyes opened by CPS' loaner and feeling the need, or 3) buying another great camera body from an FMer and falling further and further down the rabbit hole? Ha-ha! All the above, right?

Your photos of the dust storms are truly intense!

some random f/2.8 samples on the 1Ds3, mostly at ISO 200 to ISO 400 if I remember correctly, possibly with a few at ISO 800.. full gallery can be seen at: Toronto Zombie Walk 2012

I keep trying to talk myself into posting some casual comparison shots I just took between the original 24-70L and the new one. I'm kind of shell-shocked. The new lens is at least twice as good in center sharpness and all the other usual attributes. Now I have to figure where the money is coming from. ;\

The happy news is the new lens looks amazing in my preliminary tries with zero MA adjustment on 1Ds3.

Here goes:

These image were shot wide open at f/2.8, ISO 100. LR4 for sharpening (60, 0.6, 36) and CA box checked. Minor exposure adj on the dog photo (-0.12). Unfortunately, they don't show quite as well at screen resolution, but the torch pots show definite lack for highlight purple and improved sharpness in the new lens.

Overall scene photo

Jim, you can buy that lens for a little less than the MSRP now . I know it is still high and to some it may not be worth the difference regardless. But if you want to squeeze every little gain you can get out of your system, then by all means, this lens may do the trick in that focal length range.

Loving this lens... Much like I did when I bought my 70-200 II... It just is such a solid performer. Amazing walk-around lens. Sharp as can be end to edge. Edge performance is extraordinary. Here are a few examples from this lens...

f/5.6 ISO 400 on 1Ds3 with zero MA. My normal PP in LR4, including some slight crops. No lens profile used.

Fred, Joshua and Andy -- terrific shots!

I returned my CPS loaner yesterday.

What a wonderful lens! It seems I'm going to have to do some scheming and gear juggling. This is definitely the best IQ zoom I've ever used.
