I picked up a non-DG version of the 120-300, but would love to upgrade to the OS version with the focus limiter switch. Anyone know when they are supposed to ship? Thanks

I don't think Sigma has said when the new lenses will ship yet. Let's just hope they don't pull a Canon on us.

It's such a compelling focal length range at f2.8 and with a 1.4x TC you get a great range at f4 as well. I really want this zoom to succeed. If it has reliable AF I'm definitely getting it.

I read on another forum that the reincarnation of the 120-300 OS is scheduled to be released in January 2013.

Having tested the current OS version against a Canon 300mm f2.8L IS (type 1)several months ago, my only complaint was the lack of a focus limiter.... the optical quality of the Sigma in comparison to the older Canon was very, very close... and that's sayin' something!

I'm not waiting. I pulled the trigger on a new EX 120-300/2.8 OS.v1 (first version of the lens with OS) earlier this week.

The post linked above includes links to a few reviews of the OS.v1: IQ and AF are not issues...

If all other things are equal, including price, I would never buy the one without a focus-limiter.

EBay & Hong Kong? You are brave. Let us know how that goes and if you get dinged for duty.

The thing that puts me off the 120-300 ever so slightly is focal length at anything other than infinity.

Read this while looking around (and also seen much the same at other sites as well) on the Bob Atkins review

"For example when close focused at around 10ft at the nominal 300mm zoom setting, I measured an effective focal length of about 240mm. What this means is that you get about 80% of the image size you might expect from a 300mm lens focused at that distance.
The focal length change gets smaller as the focus distance is increased, so that at 30ft its up to around 273mm and at 50ft it's up to 281mm. At infinity I measured close to 300mm. As I said, many lenses do this but sometimes it can take people by surprise if they are unaware of the fact. The effect is sometimes referred to as "focus breathing"."

Also it mentions about the focusing and lack of limiter .
I think I'd rather have the limiter . I have a sigma 300/2.8 prime which I picked up for a real good price. That lacks the limiter as well and it can get slightly annoying , not just for the slightly longer focus time but also if I'm shooting thru a fence etc.
I do find it strange that these lenses lack the limiter as I had up til a couple of weeks ago a sigma 300/4 HSM (not digital compliant) and that DID have a limiter . The very clever thing about that limiter was that if you set it when you were focused below the longer MFD it wouldn't try to focus past the long setting which made it great for closer subjects as well.

I'll be using it mostly for field and rink sports, plus 'wildlife' when the 500/4L IS is too big to bring along. I don't think this focal length effect will be a problem for me, but you're right to point it out - potential owners should be aware of it. For sports, I'll probably most often use it with a 1.4x Extender on a 1DIV, alongside a 70-200/2.8L IS II on 1DX.

I'm a little late to this party, but can anybody tell me if this 'focus breathing' (FB) is a common problem with most longer lenses, to varying degrees. For example, what, if anything, does the Canon 300 2.8 do re FB? The 400 2.8? The 100-400 2.8? If this is present in these lenses as well, then this is a noteworthy but not significant issue.

This is the reason why I went with a 300 2.8 prime. Most times I'll be using it in conjunction with a 70-200 2.8 anyways so the zoom isn't as important. If I'm buying a 300, I sure want it to be 300mm and nothing else. I only got it last week but enjoying so far. No sports assignments with it yet but surely soon.

That's true of most zooms, some are worse that others. The Canon 100-400L is only 335mm at mfd, and the Nikon 70-200 is only around 130mm at mfd. The Sigma 50-500 is 465mm at infinity; not sure what it is at mfd. What was worse for me was with the original 120-300 at least, it was only 280 at infinity. I've read the new one is much closer to 300 and you have verified this.
