p.1 #1 · Single light Self Portrait

After having dinner with a close photographer friend last week, I felt inspired to do what I have found to be one of the hardest things in photography - the self portrait. After getting some equipment out, I quickly remembered that I loaned about 1/2 my lenses and all but one of my speedlights out to our associate shooter.

In other words: One speedlight is all I had. So off it went through my homemade beauty dish.

Nice self portrait (if you were looking for the hard shadow look). I might have use a white reflector to provide just a bit of fill on the left of your face but that's just me.

It's always kind of hard to comment on portraits when it isn't clear the effect the photographer was looking for.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks, Jerald.

I actually had a reflector (silver side) reflecting back on my face, but I didn't feel like I was filling in the shadows around my left (camera right) eye enough to make it effective. Originally, I had planned on doing a rim light with a snooted speedlight at the back of the left side of my head (camera right). But, again, I was working with just the one light.

So I made the call to take it edgy with distinct shadows. I'm honestly more of a goofy/dorky kinda' guy, and everyone who's seen this picture keeps saying, "Dude. You look old and mean. What's up with that?"

I find the dark side a bit too dark. I think seeing a bit the that eye is important.

I like the processing - but it seems like it would be good to see a bit more of your dark side.

ditto. I like the mood a lot, but just opening up the shadows for a little more definition in the right side of your face would help

Maybe his left part of the face isnt really good. Thats why he is hiding it. Maybe he has an ugly tattoo of a unicorn on his cheek?

I don't mind your "dark side" IF you'd wear a dark shirt and get some distance from the background, in order to darken that as well.

Oh, I just notice a dark "jagged" spot (?) on your left eye and another one, over your left half a beard !??
As if you did a bad job in (even) darkening those two spots !?
Anyone see this ?

I like edgy looks. I just finished a Colby Brown vidcast where he had one evocative portrait cropped right down the center of the nose. That might be interesting too, as long as you kept the light half

Nice, but like others, too dark on your left ... unless, you put in a red laser like a Borg! That would cool.

How did you know about my unicorn tattoo?!?!?

Also, I'm a deeply rooted Trekkie, so the Borg idea. Not too shabby.

I'm sure my face is a little less uniform and identical from side to side.

I look like this on a good day...

Maybe you guys can help me.

When I look at the B&W's on my monitor the pictures are muddy looking. They don't have crisp black blacks or white whites, as well as the grays in between. Is this the style presented or is it my monitor that needs to be recalibrated? If this is the style I don't have a problem with it, but if it's my monitor, I've got some work to do.
