My lovely but clumsy wife dropped the 40mm Pancake not very long ago. It now does not register when mounted on my 50D or her T4i (ERR 01). However, it works perfectly on my 5D2. Why would this be?

I dunno, but tell her you need to sell the 50d and rebel for a second 5d2!

Check all the contacts, make sure they're clean, none of them are bent or mis-aligned? Maybe one of them is just enough out of whack that some of the bodies don't make a good connection.

Also try focussing to as close as it will go, and then to infinity, see if something is catching or if the barrel feels 'off' at any point.

See if it works in manual focus mode?

Well, a 40 2.8 is very forgivable. On the other hand, a wreaked 200 1.8L/2.0L would probably require some type of intervention or counseling....

It's a cheap lens. Perhaps there is a problem with the firmware.

+1

The lens isn't communicating with the body. Examine the rear of the lens carefully and gently rub a pink eraser on the lens contacts. Make sure no debris is left behind before re-attaching the lens to a body.

Here's a link to what the rear of the lens looks like.

I think it's broken.

It's probably less expensive to buy a new one than to get it fixed. That's what happened last year when I dropped my brand new 1.4x Mk III Extender.

Anyway, you should be able to get a free estimate from Canon Service.

Should be new enough to be under warranty still?

Send it to Canon and tell them it stopped working....

Pretty sure the warranty doesn't cover "dropped due to clumsiness".

The warranty on the lens or the warranty on the wife?

You know, I find it very interesting how much sarcasm is used on these forums. Granted, the sarcasm on this post is very funny

I've been reading random forums on FM for a very long time though (just joined because I didn't realize that gmail was an acceptable email -_-)

Actually the lens would be tastier and easier to digest than my second wife's real pancakes.
