I known for a lot of people to choice is obvious, but from what I am reading the 55-200 is supposed to be a surprisingly good lens. I am a beginner and at the moment have the kit 18-55 and 50 1.8g. I would like to try some landscape stuff but would also like a zoom to get out into the longer range. Just looking for some opinions from people who have experience with either or both lenses. Thanks

For around $100 used in mint condition, the 55-200mm vr is a no brainer. It's a good lens. I have one and won't sell it as long as I still have my dx camera.

The 55-200 is actually a great lens! For me, the only drawback was its relatively slow autofocus, but that may not matter for what you shoot. The 70-300 focuses significantly faster, but is also much bigger and twice as heavy.

just for landscape, 55-200 VR good enough, for some fast moving stuff, 70-300 VR

Another option is the 55-300, metal mount, very sharp and light weight. KEH has it LN for around 240$. You get the reach of 70-300, half the price and better build than the 55-200.

thanks for all the suggestions. Sounds like a lot of you are happy with the 55-200. For the price and my skill level its sounds like a better fit for me at the moment.

I would also consider the Tamron 70-300mm. It is a lot less than the Nikon and I think is a better choice.

Another factor is weight. The 55-200vr is nice and light. I loved it on my D40 when hiking. I now have a Tamron 70-300, but it's quite heavy and would totally unbalance a small body.

55-200vr.. I just bought one for 120 used with other and its awesome. 50 1.8 is a great prime also, thats my next lens i plan to pickup although im still in debate with that or the 35.

Wow its seems the 55-200s still have it. Glad to see almost everyone seems to be on the same page, which is actually not what I expected.

Steve thanks for the heads up on the Tamron. I had heard that is a nice lens as well.

Nickyb, the only thing I can say about the 50mm is that I have read it is probably one of the best deals out there for what you pay and what you get. However, if you have a DX frame, like I do, you might be wishing you had more room to work with. I find it kind of tight at times and think about the 35mm. But all in all I love the lens and just take a few steps back (hard inside at times) and problem solved.

Thanks for the heads up! Ill slap the kit lens on and shoot from 35 and 50 and see which I would use more often.

I used to have both 35 and 50 and each has its benefits on DX. 35 is great for street and indoor photography especially at night. The 50 was great for portrait and it's very sharp. You can get both for around $200 like new, now that's one great deal!
