p.1 #1 · Russia- a Lake Baikal village- Siberia

A couple hours of driving from Irkutsk brought us to Lake Baikal and a very modest village.
12 images.

Really terrific set of shots Charlie. I've read about this lake in a couple of Clive Cussler novels and its great to see images of it...interesting way of life there. The wood pile is the tell tale sign of how cold it gets there! Thanks for sharing!

Excellent. Reminds me a bit of a cross between a Newfoundland outport and a village from Alaska.

Thanks Greg, Ken and Bill.
Walking around the village, I saw almost no-one. Not sure why.
It was November, and the air was a bit nippy, but the sun was warm.
Because Lake Baikal is so big and extremely deep, I doubt if it freezes much in winter. My guess is the air would be a whole lot colder than the water.

Interesting photos...and once again it amazes me how many places you have been in your travels.

The photos remind me of Alaska too.

Thanks Martin and Steady.
Yes, I see similarities with some remote native villages I've been to in Alaska.
As cold as it can get in winter, though, this part of Siberia is below the Arctic Circle- and forests surround it for hundreds of miles. Well- except for the ravaged sections of the forests.

Now this is a part of the world that takes some effort to get to, and one that I think I would like to see. This, and Kamchatka.

It looks very stark, clear and bright in your photos.

Great set, Charlie! My favorites are the one of the old green car and the first two of your last four.

Thanks Sirimiri, Bev and Morris.
I like doing a series when the subject is appropriate.
There are innumerable facets to a remote Siberian village, and I don't pretend to know anything more about it than I gleaned in just a few hours of concentrated looking as I wandered through it.
But even a cursory look helps me understand that these people lived a hard, simple life, and I have no problem thinking of them all having close contact and real feelings with each other.
