I have a guy wanting to trade a Canon 70-200mm F4L in great shape for my ipad 2 att 32 gig. The lens is fine except sometimes when in manual mode the focus sticks. What would the lens be worth if I decided to trade and then sell it?

I would not touch the lens given that flaw. Maybe it has been dropped.

Please take a look at mine. The condition is great and so is the price! Will email photos upon request.
Thanks,

Take a look on the B&S section here on FM. Search for "Canon 70-200". That will narrow down the number of hits. You will still have to sort among the 70-200/f2.8 and 70-200/f4 IS lenses. Take a look at the sold ones, see what the price was (the actual selling price may have been lower - depending on what deal the seller/buyer settled on).

In great shape I would guess around $450-500. The sticking manual focus is of concern - something happened. Might drop the value to around $300 (just my guess - I wouldn't pay more than that). The cost of sending to Canon for check-out/repair is probably around $150.

If it is the IS (image stabilized) version the value is higher (around $875 for like new).

Price for a Canon refurbished 70-200/f4 L (non-IS) is $568. Canon refurbished lenses are like new and set the upper limit (for me) on selling used.

Jim

The 70-200 F4 is a good lens and worth the cost. Even new cost.

On the one hand it's fair and adds trust if someone tells you the lens has a slight defect when focussing manual. On the other hand what defect does your Ipad 2 have? No way that I would trade something good for something not working 100%. The 70-200/4.0L may still be a good lens, but I wouldn't trust a product with a defect, even if it's a small defect. Sell the iPad and from the revenues buy a good copy instead. There are more than enough in mint condition from owners that want to upgrade and seek their EOSfun in the newer IS version or one of the 2.8 releases.
