p.1 #1 · Which lens to buy for General walk around.
Hi i dont own any Lens starting from fresh want to buy D800 or D600 because here in UK D800 is only £200 expensive then D600. i like to buy Nikon 70-200 and one prime for general, city scape or walk around what prime would be better. I am not pro or make money from Photography just hobby. I shoot every thing.
I used to have canon 7d and 5d MKII with canon 70-200 f4 and canon 24-105 f4 sold all and moving to Nikon
Your advise will be appreciated

Unfortunately, Nikon doesn't yet have any comparable lenses that perform as well as the two Canon lenses you sold, but the 24-120mm f4 VR is pretty good for a general walk-around lens.
If you want to save some money, the new 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 VR is just about as good as the 24-120 VR for about half the price.

It depends a lot of your most used FL... If I have to pick for myself as a walk around prime the new 28/1.8 AF-S would be the one. It works as a charm on D800.

If you know you just love to live at 70-200 then I guess that makes sense - although the 70-300 vr is super for the $ and similar to your 70-200 f4 I'd say, at $1500 less than the 70-200 vrII.
The 24-70G is also stellar and would give you a kit from 24mm to 200 or 300mm whichever way you go on the long end, and you could pick up a 50G for pocket change if you want something fast and light

I thought the price of the D600 was dropped in the UK. Have you compared the kit price with the 24-85 VR? That is a really good walkaround lens if you don't want to shell out the cash for the 24-70.

I love the 28mm 1.8. It's lightweight and tack sharp!

I love my Tamron 28-75 2.8 and its just as sharp as some of the best Nikon lenses of that range while only around $350 used. I've also heard great things about the Nikon 24-120 f4 vr and looking at getting one myself in the future.

You could get the 24-70 2.8 (far better than the v1 Canon counterpart and significantly cheaper than the v2) and the 70-300 VR or Tamon 70-300
Another option would be the 28 1.8G an excellent lens for which Canon has no comparable (quality) lens. That is if you like zooms. The lens hardly gets taken off my camera.

Thank you for your replies. I'm not here to compare nikon or canon lens, I used to have canon. I Idecided to go for D800 all I need to select lens I can't afford 70-200 f2.8 vrii iam leaning toward 28 mm for landscape and walk around, but still deciding

if you just want one walkaround lens, and not knowing what sort of shooting you might do, i would recommend you consider the 28-300vr...it's not perfect, but for a one lens quiver it works pretty well, especially in good light.

Don't overlook older AI/AIS lenses particularly the 28 2.8 AIS and 105 2.5 AIS, both are arguably one of the best lenses Nikon made. The Nikon 35-70 2.8D is a great lens and very sharp and very affordable. The Nikon 28-105 is also a very affordable walk around (below $200!) and has much favorable reviews and it has macro as well.

My 24-120 f4 vr is every bit as sharp as the two canon 24-105 lens's I've owned in the past. If I were to buy a all in all around walk around lens now it would be the 28-300 for fx body.

I have several lenses for my D800 but I find myself carrying my 24-120 F4 VR more than anything else when hauling only 1 lens. Depending on what I intend to shoot, I'll add my 70-300 VR or the 17-35 Tokina. If I need to be very prepared I'll take all 3 in my Think Tank Retrospective 7.
