Is there any way to determine the age of a 17-55 EFS lens?

I owned one, and other than the original purchase receipt, there was no other way to determine the lens age I was aware of.

Michelle,

I've look all over the interweb, near every review of EF-S lenses mention no date code, only a serial number, you might call canon support...idk..they might be able to track it or it's lot number, if I find something I'll post it...I've not been much help! I've a 10-22 I may sell, guess I need to find it's invoice/receipt...just picked up a 17-40 to replace it

Jerry

They haven't been around very long so none of them are ancient yet. I think the oldest ones appeared during summer 2006 and weren't easy to get until the following year. The zoom creeps after extensive use so a loose-as-a-goose zoom as well as plenty dust under the front element means it's been around the block. The lens ROM contains the manufacture date but is hard to get at unless you have a Canon tech friend on speed-dial.

This may help a bit. There will be some variation, of course, but here are SNs as we acquired them:

2007 - 18xxxxxx, 19xxxxxx, 29xxxxxx, 30xxxxxx, 31xxxxxxx
2008 - 39xxxxxx, 40xxxxxxx, 42xxxxxx, 43xxxxxxx, 46xxxxxx
2009 -- 43xxxxxx, 46xxxxxx, 54xxxxxx, 60xxxxxx,
2010 -- 60xxxxxx, 64xxxxxx, 66xxxxxx, 68xxxxxx, 69xxxxxx, 70xxxxxx, 71xxxxxx
2011 -- 71xxxxxx and higher

FWIW, the IS problems seem to have been solved in late 2009, so if the SN is less than 60xxxxxx I'd inquire about whether the IS unit is original.

Roger - thank you so much!!! Perfect information. Mine is a 78xxxxxxx so that gives me a great estimate on the age.

You are the best, thanks again!!

Roger , you've made my day.
I just got a very nice 2nd hand example a couple of months back (and I'm liking it a lot) . After reading your list I went to my bag in trepidation thinking I'm bound to have a 18x or so.
Made me smile lots when I read the sn 7900xxxx

I got it a t a good price as well
