p.1 #1 · ok, I can't live with the 50 1.4 anymore

IQ is great but the lousy AF and clunky mechanics are killing me/driving me up the wall

now, as I understand it the sigma can't focus at all and the f1.2 can't 50% of the time. but do either of these two lenses miss focus quickly and quietly? I'm willing to settle.

it's either that or the zeiss, huh?

I mean if none of these AF lenses can focus maybe zeiss isn't such a bad idea?

and you can't MF with the canon 1.4 because the ring is just total crap with tons of play in it

I'm in the same place (don't have the 50 1.4, but the old AF is keeping me away).
I went through a couple copies of the Sigma and sent them in for calibration and could never trust the AF. (Too bad since the optical quality was great, the focus ring was way too stiff for MF).
I don't know about the 1.2, it's probably quiet and I'm sure the AF is better than the Sigma, but from what I read it isn't perfect. If I had the money I'd buy it regardless.

Man, you must have absorbed a lot of unreliable information. I use both the EF 50/1.2L and 50/1.4 USM. They're both fine lenses, and they both have reliable AF. What camera are you using?

I also use Zeiss and other manual focus lenses, but that's not because my Canon AF lenses can't AF. Get a grip - and I don't mean for your camera.

None of my lenses are perfect, nor am I. If you're looking for a perfect lens, then you should read the Alt forum for at least three years, and then buy it. The perfect lens that is, not the forum

P.S. then let us know the answer; what is the perfect lens?

The 50 f/1.4 is not a reliably focusing lens. It's the one lens I've used on the 5DM3 that exhibits significant shot-to-shot AF variance. I love the lens too but it's AF is just not consistent.

I'm using the EF 50 1.4 on a 5d3. AF sucks in all but great light and I'm sick of listening to it clunk and chug along as it struggles to acquire focus

I'm not looking for the perfect lens, I'm looking for the lens that's a lot more enjoyable than the 50 1.4

I've been shooting with the EF 50 1.2L since Spring 2008 and it rarely misses focus and is a lot more surefooted than the 50 1.4 USM (my prior 50). It is also faster albeit not as fast or surefooted as a my L zooms (17-40, 24-105 & 70-200). But as far as 50s go, it has the best AF among the Canon 50 1.8, 50 1.4 and 50 2.5.

I think a lot of the bad vibes concerning 50 1.2L focus originated with lessor cameras. It was a lot more iffy on my 5D (classic) and Elan but works fine on my 7D and 5D2. On my 5D2 I just have to stick to the center point and it focus on just about anything. In good light even the side points are fine. I hear it's even better on the 5D3/1DX but I haven't tried that combo yet.

My 50 1.2L review:

At one point I had 2 Sigma 50mm at the same time and both copy were awesome, among the best 50mm I every used (including Leica, and Zeiss). AF was fast and accurate.

Ditto, my Sigma has been perfect and it is one of the older finish models as well. I have heard the newer finish models have less issues so you may want to give it a try.

I've had the Sigma 50mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.2L and the Canon 50mm 1.8. My least favorite was the 1.2L. The Sigma IQ is great but I couldn't get it to focus right. The 1.8 is "ok".

I really like the focal length, but I would agree and say there isn't a "perfect" lens at that FL (for me.)

The Zeiss Makro is intriguing. I was tempted to pick up a m4/3 with the Voightlander 25mm 0.95, but haven't done it.

Maybe the new 40mm 2.8 STM?

+1: AF of the 50/1.2 is a lot better, but it is still okay with the 50/1.4. Optically, there is nothing wrong with the 50/1.4. I am using it for years, and it is still going fine .

How is your focusing technique? 1.2 and 1.4 can be difficult if you the user is not careful.
