p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First Ice Hockey photo session - C&C - photo heavy

Hi all, I just went to my first live ice hockey game yesterday and of course decided to take my Nikon D800 and Nikon AF-S 80-200 out for a spin. This is of course also my first ice hockey photo session.
Comments and critiques would be appreciated.

Two words of advice if you're serious about wanting critique: do some post-processing to crop and process to maximize what you're offering with each photo, and pick your best 10 at most to post for feedback.

Hi Russ,

I have done some more post processing on the photo's where my copyright label is on.

Well... being that you have edited the originals, I really can't comment. I will say that there are way too many photos. Two-thirds could have been eliminated right from the get go. Also, there appears to be some vignetting on some that I'm not a fan of.

Stefan, good for you to start on the long road to ice hockey shooting. IMHO the hardest thing to shoot. Look up the posts by DJ Dunzie. He has some great tutorials about shoot hockey and will help you immensely! Don't get frustrated, shoot, check your work, and post only your best for C and C. Good luck, the journey is the fun part.

As mentioned in the previous replies, way too many photos, and most of them need more post work. I think a lot of them are dark (player faces) and some of them the action... well there isn't much action!

Also, if you want good C&C, make sure that you either leave the EXIF info in the pictures or that you post the ISO/shutter/aperture information at a minimum. Shooting more (manual / priority aperture / etc...) would also help.

Cheers.

The shots look good but too dark. Like others have said, a little post processing will have 'em looking great. There are too many for constructive criticism.

Sorry to add to the fire here, but yeah, I'd knock future posts down to your top 10-12 images instead and get feedback from there. #, #9, #10, #11, #14, #18, #19, #20, #21, #22, and #23 really don't do anything for me and I'd leave them out altogether, and then the rest would have made for a really enjoyable set.

As already mentioned, most are a little underexposed for my tastes. You've really preserved the ice and for me that's not what makes a hockey shot, it's the faces and details in the players. Compare your exposure in #1 with #3... #1 to me is just about right... nice white ice and lots of detail in the players, #3 comes off dark and lost detail to my eyes.

Regardless, a lot to like. A few would benefit from going a lot tighter too as they're just plain cropped too loose. You have potential for some great isolation shots, like in #4 with two players, but there's a lot of dead space around the players that would have made for a great tight shot if cropped down.

Pretty solid IQ, decent timing on some, so now just work on getting the timing down a little better and get a little more exposure in-cam and you're well on your way!

Going a little tighter on the players:

Keep at it! CHEERS....
