With a heavy heart it seems a river-fording incident has claimed the life of my trusty 35L. (Canon wanted $2k+ to fix it. Seriously?)

Any suggestions on what I should do with it now that I have a fancy paperweight in my possession?

See if a 3rd party will repair it for cheaper. Never makes sense to me how Canon will quote a repair cost more than the price of a new lens.

you can gut it and make a mug out of it.... oh wait, damn its already been done... but you will have the only 35L and it will actually be from a real 35L frame!!! do it! and buy yourself a new one.

i just saved you $500+!

sell the mug for $200

how can it cost 2k to repair? If you can, I'd be interested in seeing the canon estimate.

Most I've seen for a lens repair is 1200 after 30% discount for a broken AF motor in the 85mm L.

You might call these folks, I've talked to Steve several times, he repaired an old film camera of mine and did a fantastic job for a very reasonable price, good luck, hope you can get it fixed, that's a fine bit of glass!

Thanks for the suggestions (and recommendations). It's certainly worth getting a second opinion on repair costs.

Here's the estimate I received. You'll see that parts is where they've already exceeded the price of a new lens. Add on labor and you get a truly O_O worthy estimate.

That is laughable. They should at least offer you a trade in on a refurb at the current 20% off price!

It's a Canon's way of saying go buy a new one, but if you really want us to fix it this is the price.

They are going to take apart a new lens and use it to repair yours?

Looks like the tech will basically have to gut the lens and rebuild with new parts in order to insure reliable operation. While it is pricy, realize it is probably slower and more labor intensive to rebuild an optic by hand in a small shop than in a well equipped factory with highly skilled workers that make lenses all day. I bet if your new BMW fell in a river, the cost to restore it to new condition would exceed the cost of a new one.

When a lens is damaged, it automatically becomes as precious as that Leica 600mm monster of $2 million cost.

Isn't there a guy on the buy/sell forum that's always trying to buy broken lenses? You might see if he's interested in passing a few bills your way.

It is pretty common for parts to exceed the costs of a new product. Cars are a good example.

Sell it on eBay "as-is" with full disclosure of what happened to the lens. You may get close to what you originally paid for the lens, since there are a lot of crazy people buying things on eBay.

+1

I've sold saltwater damaged cameras in the past, and got a surprising amount of money for them. Either that, or get someone to record a video of you "accidentally" dropping it off a cliff, or in the ocean, then see if it will go viral in the photo community and you can make some money off google adsense in youtube. :-)

Is your gear insured??

As someone else said, there is someone on the For Sale forum looking for broken lenses. I ran into his post today.

Wow... a friend of mine flooded a 100 2.8L Macro in a swimming pool and Canon fixed it for $250. Came back better than new... evidently, it was backfocusing before and my friend never realized it.
