I recently switched to a M43 Olympus OMD E-M5 as I like the quality of this package when coupled with the light weight...nice balance for me.

I am looking for a quality tripod & head solution but here is my dilemma...I want something that is very well made and super stable but not really bulky. I don't need something big/bulky as the unit won't be supporting a heavy DSLR setup. I also would prefer quickly adjustable ball head.

The smaller tripods I have seen tend to come up short in the quality build and sturdy category. Does any reputable manufacturer make a quality tripod to fit this nitch? As an additional note, I would like something lightweight so carbon fiber is okay as well...

Cost is not the issue here...quality is. I just hope can find a really well made tripod that isn't designed to hold a 20lb kit...

Any input is appreciated...

A series 2 legs/head setup may be just what you need. If money is not an issue, look for the RRS TVC-23 with maybe an RRS BH-30 or BH-40 ballhead. I believe one is on sale right here in the B&S forum: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1151765/0

In the end, working height will be more important than quality as there are a lot of high quality tripods available. The RRS one mentioned above is not a very tall tripod, but comes with a center column attachment I believe.

I was looking for much the same thing as you. After much research, I decided on Gitzo 2541 legs and RRS BH-40 ball head. I am very happy with this set up.

I travel with the Really Right Stuff TQC-14 tripod with the RRS BH-40 ball head. You may find lighter or more compact, but you will not find better build quality. This set up will last you forever!

Really, a 2-series tripod, and mid-sized (BH40) ballhead for a camera that's almost pocket-sized? Be serious, guys. I'm doubtful the OP wants a 3.5 to 4+ pound tripod setup for a 1 pound camera.

I mentioned the series 2 kit for operating height as well as weight concerns. For me atleast, I don't want a tripod weighing less than 3 pounds- too unstable in wind.

Like I said before, operating height matters more in this case.

not so much with a hook on the bottom to support already carried dead weight while the tripod is in use.

Unfortunately that doesn't apply to me. I carry my tripod inside my hard case with all my camera gear

Point conceded though, a weighed down tripod is much more stable.
