p.1 #1 · Mount Assiniboine - Climber's Perspective

A few weekends ago I climbed Mount Assinbioine via the northeast ridge route with a friend. For late September we had amazing conditions - dry rock and very little snow and ice on route. We also climbed Lunette - the peak right beside Assiniboine. Both peaks are over 11,000 feet but Mount Assiniboine is over 11,700 feet and is a spectacular "Matterhorn of the Rockies".

I never though I'd get up this mountain but I'm super-psyched that I did! Here's some shots I managed to grab both before and on the climb itself.

Assiniboine as seen from the Hind (climber's) hut the evening before the climb. We've already done over 4000 feet of height gain to get to the hut and this is the main part of the climb left. It's about 3000 feet up the ridge to the summit from here.

Totally fantastic. I like the 4th one best, and the 3rd is amazing too, but imagine the 2nd is pretty cool when blown up big. I was there this weekend last year (in the huts, not on top of the mountain) and this brings up memories.

Just curious, looking at the first pic ... which face did you climb to get up there?

Thanks Don! We climbed the left skyline ridge. This is a 5.5 climb.

incredible vern...i attempted assiniboine twice 40 and 35 years ago and never made the summit. both times storms came in and verglas on the rock...then you had to trudge in 12-14 miles from the end of the rutted spray lakes road and carry up to 75 pounds of gear and pro..ha those were not fun approaches.

beautiful photography and my son would love to do that peak someday. bill

Thanks Bill. There's actually a much shorter approach from the BC side that we did. (www.explor8ion.com/climbs/assiniboine.html) The drive is longer from Calgary but the approach distance is cut in half. The trade-off is that you have to cross a glacier and there's more height gain.
