Highlight one of your files you want to open. Press command I, a window with info on the file will open. About half way down the info window there will be pull down menu that says open with. Change the open with to Photoshop CS6 and click the change all button below it. Now double click your file and it should open in CS6.

Thanks, but been there, done that. It still does not work.
[This is for Windows, not Mac. Sorry about that. I didn't notice you have a Mac.]
I had that problem. It could not be fixed by any of the several methods that I thought should logically work. Finally, it turned out there is a place in the registry where you have to put "CS6" in place of an older version number.
It's confusing to read all that, but actually pretty simple when you do it because in my case it was just changing a "5" to a "6" in the right registry key. Ignore messages in that thread that talk about doing things other than the simple registry change!
What sort of system maintenance are you doing? I highly recommend both MacOSX Cocktail and Disk Warrior as a dual pronged attack at Mac system weirdness. Cocktail repairs permissions as well as a whole host of other things while DW fixes registry problems. I tend to run Cocktail about once every couple of weeks and DW every month or so, especially when there's a specific problem like you're experiencing.
A hick-up between PS6 and Snow Leopard. Your OS X version is a little "old".
Perhaps upgrading to Mountain Lion. A never experienced this problem with PS6 and Mountain Lion

Why should I spent the money and hassle of updating to Mountain Lion when there is no proof that my present OS is the problem? Snow Leopard meets the minimum system requirements for CS6. I never experienced this problem with CS5.

I have SL and CS6 and it was perfect from day one.....I would, just to be safe, check to see you have all the upgrades installed.
Forgot to ask...are you clicking on images viewed in Bridge? If so...have you tried opening them from the CS5 version of Bridge?
