My approach to the locals of countries I visit is basic: friendly, smiling, non-manipulative, quick. I gesture with camera that I'd like to take their pictures. 99% of the time, the people oblige; they look at me with whatever expression they choose, and I take a couple of fast shots. Then I smile my thank you, and walk away.
The term "Should be" is a difficult term .
Yes, there is an abundance of contrast: the winter sun was hard, the film was contrasty Kodachrome.
But the people in Uzbekistan live in that hard and contrasty sun.
My photographic goals when I travel abroad are primarily to be as honest as I can be with the pictures- not try to make studio-quality portraits.
Opinions on this vary, of course.
Happily, the photographer gets to make the final choice .
