Sure, 100% crops on the lowly GH1:

Auto-Rokkor-PF_55mm_f1.8

Canon_FD_50mm_f1.4_SSC

Canon_nFD_50mm_f1.4

MC-Rokkor-PF_50mm_f1.7

Minolta_AF_50mm_f1.4

Nikkor-S_50mm_f1.4

Nikkor_Ai-S_50mm_f1.4

Super_Takumar_50mm_f1.4

Zeiss_Planar_50mm_f1.7

Zuiko_50mm_f1.4

Crops Marked Zuiko at f1.4

And I tested the five Zuiko 50/1.4's against one another before I sold them. I was wanting to keep the best one but ended up selling them all (actually, one buyer screwed his trying to clean the fog out so I sent him mine as a replacement for the cost of shipping). I've since collected two others but haven't tested them. They're pretty sharp wide open tho.

Actually, the OP's results look about right for the early OM 50/1.4 silvernose. It's not a worldbeater, but can be nice in the right situation. Having owned one of similar vintage I was less than impressed in the optical performance compared with other lenses of similar vintage (most notably the Super Takumar and SMC Takumar 50/1.4 which I consider to be the best fast 50 of the ~1970 era). The later OM50/1.4's do perform a lot better based on the examples I've seen.

From what I could figure out...
G.Zukio = Single coated
Zukio or Zukio MC = Multi coated

I have a "Zuiko MC" version of the 1.4, sharp and contrasty, great little lens.
I also have the MIJ "Zuiko" 1.8 which is also a great little lens, sharp as hell too.
Others to look at:
21/3.5
24/2.8
35/2.8
85/2
The faster versions are more costly, they're bigger, and possibly better IQ/ different rendering.

I dunno... I'm holding a G.Zuiko in my hand right now and that is definitely multi-coating!

"OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM G.ZUIKO AUTO-S 1:1.4 f=50mm 223320"

Mawz, if "early silver-nose" is to be distinguished from "later silver-nose" then that could be.

I think the post processing might have softened some of the F1.4 images. Here it is with light post processing and no color changes.

The impression of sharpness is probably also biased by the fact that you're not seeing the much sharper stopped down image immediately after.

In Lightroom, switching between post and non-post images show no difference in resolution or sharpness when looking at the same aperture.

Interesting...I just picked up one of these just the other day (Olympus G.Zuiko Auto -S 1:1.4 f=50mm 282234) It was in nice condition and cheap. I previously had a >1.1mil version ....it was nice but sold it to help pay for the 50/1.2

I'm with Lightshow as to how to identify the multi-coated versions. IIRC it's not that easy to identify by looking at them since Olympus used a variety of coatings, the ones referred to as 'single coated' may actually be earlier versions of multi-coating (this is speculation on my part), but the later versions that are generally referred to as 'multi-coated' do generally have better color saturation and flare resistance. Given the choice I'd probably pick up a multi-coated version, but the earlier versions have their 'charm' as well.

This sure looks like multi-coating to me!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXr5847jtt8

That's my lens (named above) I just took a quick video of.

Single coating is single colored in the reflections like that. Multi-coating bands into different colors like what is seen in the video.

Bif I think your Super Tak is radioactive based on the yellow image. Exposure to uv is supposed to clear that up.

Saw one lens test that said leica was sharper in low contrast situations I believe. Of course in bright sunshine you wouldn't want high contrast. There are so many variables in photography at some point I grab a good lens and go shoot. The 50/1.4 is a good lens.

Om lenses come closer to German lenses in general imo than other Japanese makes. See 16-9.net where a silvernose 28 was better than zeiss in corner or 21 was up there with leica. My 21 is kinda bad though.

Here's how I tell mc:

1. No letter in front of zuiko
2. Green reflections
3. Says mc

Green reflections seem good way. One of the three enough to at least wonder. Havent seen a lens with a letter in front of zuiko that has green reflections.

OK, 3 against 1... I yield... But that sure is pretty and deep looking for single coating then.

Yeah the Tak needs a Sun bath for sure! It's almost amber colored.

Um, the single coat usually gives off a yellowish reflection while the multi-coated ones are purpleish, maybe they have many different variation in coating...

By the way Bif, the de-yellowed Tak has amazing color, still soft at f1.4 but very good at f2.

As with anything, there are always exceptions, eg, swapping elements from 2 damaged lenses to make a good one, or during transition periods where stock from the old line is replaced with the new line to cut losses.

My "Zuiko MC" 50/1.4 #8005xx & "Zuiko" 21/3.5 #1219xx have purple & green tones, both front & rear.
All the rest that have X.Zuiko seem to have more gold/yellow

Thoughts Olympus 35-70 f3.6 on a nex? Is it worth it compared to a modern zoom?

Yeah, I've had the C/Y Zeiss and it was an amazing lens.

I'm just curious about the Olympus since it's about 1/6th the price.

Never used 35-70 but the 35-105 did well in tests. I don't think mine is as good as theirs wide open though. Think all those were mc. Ed Sawyer had access to a bunch of old MP if they ever tested 35-70/3.6.

Tamron 35-80/2.8-3.8 might be worth a look.

If you want cheap older stuff try Tamron. I think the 28-80 sp 28-70 62mm and 35-135 58mm all gave higher sharpness in the old mp tests than the 50/1.8 metal mount eos that gets great
reviews. These zooms were $10-$20 each. 35-135 has greenish yellow cast 28-70 flare at 70. Was happy with a 35-135 67mm on film. Later model?

Adaptall-2.org

Think eos 50 topped out at 63 lp/mm at f/8 or so.
