I wanted to check the combo 400 f/2.8 IS MkI + 2xTC MkIII once more before I sell the lens, if I ever sell it, that is.

I have been privileged to have a herd of Woodpijuns at my disposal, so I have built a pretty good image library with different lenses/combos, all on the same target type. Therefore, this combo was tested on Woodpijuns as well. The only major difference is that I've had no sunshine this time around. Consequently, the bird's feather iridescence has not been "ignited" very much.....however, that in itself is not all bad because strong iridescence creates a myriad of minute highlites which are not always easy to present well on the entire image level.

The shoot parameters were:

Monopod mounted, 1DX camera, ISO 1600, f/5.6, around 1/2000 sec, Servo AF single AF pt., shot as JPG only.

Four better test images are shown below, and the typical crop magnification was about 20 %.
No NR used of any sort, and very minor three minute post processing type.

Quite a positive statement regarding the 2x-TC vIII ability to provide a sharp capture. Never tire looking at ur pijuns Peter.

Those are fanatastic considering the use of the 2X extender. Easily as sharp as what I get with the 500mm f/4 Mark I and the 1.4X Mark II.

Thank you Ian, Matt and John for your feeback.

I think the combo is certainly a way for someone to get a fairly decent 800mm f/5.6.
The resolving power is not on the 800L level, but neither is the combo price.
Stopping the lens down improves the combo's sharpness a bit.

Here's another shot from the same series, just about 50-60% cropped.

How much better, if any, will the 400II look with the 2xIII?

I haven't made up my mind about that yet because these I've just got today, so I still need to look at crops side-to-side.....i.e., I am still lookin' .

Luis, I am so sorry.

I like it when a Woodpijun gazes into the lens like this.

Well for years I've been signing the praise of the 300 and 500 with 2x or stacked 1.4x and from what I've seen and read 400 may be the best of the lot with TC's. Romy Orocon has shown some amazing stuff with that combo.

Nice hand coloured pidjuns you have there Petal.

Thank you, Pixie.

Here is the way I see the situation with the TCs, which is perhaps biased by possibly marginal copies of MkII TCs I used to own:

(1) MkI lenses + MkII TCs......minor to fair perf.degradation
(2) MkI lenses + MkIII TCs.....the game improved some.
(3) MkII lenses + MkIII TCs....the game has changed.

Thank you kindly, Carter.
However, there are factors which diminished the IQ in my test, and one should keep those in mind:

(1) The combo was shoot wide open. Stopping it down to f/8 or better, yields some IQ improvement as well as better focussing.
(2) Monopod is really not much of a steadying agent from the standpoint of camera/lens motion blur. However, when doing an extended shoot with lenses such as 400 f/2.8 MkI andf 600 f/4 MkI, the monopod offers the most welcome physical relief from handholding those unwieldy lenses.
(3) A constantly moving target, servo AF mode and having to constantly shift the AF point around the frame, they all introduce additional IQ detriments.
