p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · High Girls School Soccer C&C Please

Hired to shoot a couple girls soccer games in Canton, OH on Monday afternoon/evening. I have shot very little soccer in my career (as in second high school game ever...) Thanks to Aqualung for the quick pep talk on shooting angles and positions on the way to the game.

Used Nikon D3 with 1.4 TC and 300 2.8 AFS II; D300 with 70-200 2.8 VRI (don't think there are any shots with the 70-200 in this batch.)

Would love to hear from soccer shooters about what to improve upon...

hey Rick, happy to help, looks like you got some nice shots...

Great "BOF" in #1...#3, 5, & 16 are my faves here.

A few nits:

#2 - would rather see a little more of the defender's face
#8 - ball's a little close to the frame, but, I still like it, especially the exposure.
#10 - toss, don't like the crop on blue, cutting her face
#12 - not bad, but do you have them a fraction later where they're physically battling?
#15 - like the ball timing, but wish you had #2 showing like in #14...so I think I prefer #14.
#11 - similar to #2...but I do like it a bit more as you can see white's face

Chris

Chris, Nothing nitty about your critique. I hear you loud and clear. Seems like I was a half a second late all day long. I fear my anticipation is not what it would be if I shot soccer more. I appreciate your comments very much -- especially the framing/cropping of soccer -- and the very bad crop on #10.

As for 14 vs.15, I posted both because I can't decide if I like 15. I've gone back and forth because it's a cool shot of the defender with both feet off the ground, but the obstructed face makes me think I should drop it.

Rick: #s 1, 8, 12 and 13 are the standouts for me. I guess I'm looking for faces and/or action coming towards you, peak or very-close-to-peak moments, and action that does not have an awkward feel to it. Colors are beautiful.

My own limited experience, when shooting HS female athletes, is that they (and their parents) are more concerned with how they look than capturing peak action. They don't like the intense expressions, tongues out, etc. I'm wondering if the pros who shoot more of this stuff agree?

Yeah, that's where the 'awkward' can come into play. Doesn't render peak action unimportant. Just makes it harder to pack all of the elements into a single image.

Mr. Isabella,

Mighty kind of you to weigh in. I appreciate your feedback. Really loving the full frame Nikon D3. Colors just seem to pop -- especially with good glass and a setting sun.

I understand what you are saying about action coming toward you/me. I started this game along the goal-line but the game was pretty lopsided, so I switched ends. Felt like no matter where I went, the action went the other way. Guess I have to shoot more games to get a better sense of where to be based on the talent on the field.

Thanks again for your insight. Rick

@dankopp If you want to know how to capture images of women athletes, look no farther than Russ Isabella's gymnastics photography. Stunning. Incredible athleticism -- yet very feminine and pretty. He is the master at blending the hardness of sports with the softness of being a lady.

Rick... You did everything right from a technical standpoint, but it's one of those games where the players just didn't play into your hand as well as you would have liked.

Meaning... the intensity and aesthetics in the athletes themselves fall a little short. I'm just not feeling it with this set and it's due largely in part to the game players I think. Aside from the side to side action, they just don't seem all that intense here.

That being said, there are some solid images in the set, but I think if you continue to do this sport, you'll get much better shots.

Paul, I think you hit it right on the head. There was simply nothing exciting going on. Even the goals were very mundane -- almost sloppy. Just felt ho-hum most all game.

Watch your black levels. Looks like some may be too dark.

Thanks Michael. Which one are you talking about specifically. I have just recently made the switch from the DX WORLD (D300/D300s) in FX. The D300 often needed black added so maybe I hAve over done it. Appreciate your feedback.

What program are you using for Post? If you are using lightroom, move the black slider to the right and watch the histogram. You want to move the spike so that it's not all the way on the left.a

I have seen those shots, and among all of the incredible shots I see on this board, those are the ones that make me most despair that I will ever be at the top level.

Yes. Using Lightroom 3.6. Have not upgraded to 4 yet because I hear some concerns about it's speed. I dib bump the black in this entire set (old preset from the D300 import) so I will back them down a bit. Thanks for pointing it out.

Here's the good news. You can get there. With all due respect to Russ, he didn't start at that level. Neither did any of the other INCREDIBLE sports photographers you see posting here every day. All of them evolved from one phase to the next. That is what is so amazing about the Fred Miranda community. It's watching others grow -- pushing yourself to grow. Posting. Listening. Learning. Coming back and doing it again, and again, and again. The more you shoot, the better you will become. Don't despair. There are thousands of shooters on here who have gone through it....and all you have to do is look at some of the shots coming out of their cameras to realize it will come.
