Well, I don't know about you but when talking about working distance I simply measure it (at 1:1 of course).

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

So when you take macro pictures, you just shoot at 1:1 regardless of the framing?

I understand when you're comparing specs between lenses, but considering this is between different formats, comparing the Oly 60 at 1:1 vs the Canon at 1:1 isn't really comparing anything except their minimum working distance...it doesn't give you any idea how they actually perform in the real world....and in the real world, for any given (matching) composition, the Olympus will have significantly greater working distance...and as a nice bonus, you can get twice as close as you can with the Canon if you need it.

Of course not. As you said, it's only when I compare specs. Working distance is an important factor for me so that's why I'm interested in it.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

It destroys the 12-50. (Though the 12-50 is a fun and very versatile lens.)

Any examples? A friend was visiting with his OMD and the 12-50 and we tried the 43mm setting of the macro mode
of the 12-50 vs the OM Zuiko 50mm/f2 macro. The zoom in macro mode surprisng held its own though the Zuiko rendition was nicer, IMO on the OM-D. We didn't shoot a flat target though to check the corners but central resolution and OOF rendering assessed.

The 75/1.8 of course. BTW, in about 2 weeks I'll be getting the OM-D and this will be my next lens.

Happy shooting,

Welcome to the OM-D Club, Yakim! You will go through a period of frustration as you try to navigate the menus and buttons, but very soon you will start to love this baby dslr. I highly recommend the 45/1.8 (arguably the best value) ... and also the 25/1.4 ... and, of course, the 60 macro and/or 75/1.8. I have them all. The 17/1.8 will be my next lens ... and probably the Panasonic 42.5/1.2 and 150/2.8!

You are so right - this is the normal or often is perhaps a more right word, because macro lenses are optimized for close pictures, but there are some macro-lenses which also are good at the distant.

An example for the first is the Nikon 105VR - it is best the first 15 metres, not bad longer, but there is a difference, the same goes for Nikon 60mm AF-D, but not for the Nikon 60mm AF-G, the latter is fine at distant.

I have the lenses myself, and I have read tons of tests and reviews, and you are right - at least often,

Thank you. While this deal is not 100% closed, it will probably materialize and I'll get OM-D + 20/1.7 + 45/1.8. If all goes well next are the 12/2 and 75/1.8. GH3, 17/1.8 and 42.5/1.2 are distant dreams.

BTW, I find the 42.5/1.2 very strange. Why not 42/1.2 or 43/1.2?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

So that it's 'exactly' equivalent to 85mm. It's marketing, since I'm sure the FL isn't actually 42.5...they're always off by small fractions of a mm. Same reason the Voigtlander is a 17.5mm f/0.95 - 'equivalent' to a 35mm lens.

Yeah ... it's simply because it is associated with the 85/1.2 which is a legacy lens. But it's kinda stoopid as nobody is going to be calling it 85/1.2 but 42.5 i.e. you can't say you have the 17/1.8, 25/1.5 ... and 85/1.2 lenses, as that is so not right ... and to say you have a 42.5 lens sounds a little silly. But I want one!

You can get the Olympus calculated MTF charts for m43 lenses from their website:

MILC is all about departing from the old convention (DSLR's are sill SLR's with sensor instead of film) but it seems that the maketing guys are still rooted in the past.
They should look at Pentax which even in the film era were not affraid to break conventions.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

It's interesting that you may have noticed a slight de-centering problem with your lens. Digglloyd just reviewed the lens on his paid site, to which I subscribe. I won't go into details given that it's a subscription site but he generally did not have a high opinion of the lens. It sounds like there may be some copy to copy variations.

Hmm...

Yeah, mine is an extremely high performer except in that one situation. For portraiture, macro, closer shooting of all sorts, and even more distant stuff that isn't going for full field sharpness, it's absolutely stellar...it just seems that one element might be slightly out of place, shifting the field of focus on the left edge at further focus distances. I'm going to send mine into Olympus eventually to have them fix it, but I'm not in a huge rush, as for everything I use it for, it's stellar.

^ - nice review Jordan, thanks for posting the link.

Now I just have to decide between this and the 75 1.8. If the 75 1.8 can focus as close as the 45 1.8 I may just go with the 75 - I've found the 45 1.8 focuses close enough that its perfect for the type of close-up shots that I take, which are not true macro.

Well, the 75 doesn't focus as close, but the magnification is almost identical (so framing will be the same).

I view the 75 and 45 is different lenses, as the FOV is different enough to make a significant difference. You need some working space for the 75, but I absolutely love the results. The 45 is for more intimate portraiture, IMO. The 60 splits the difference quite well, actually, though if I had to choose two, it would be a very hard decision...the 60 and 75 would be my choice purely from a photographic point of view, while the 45 is so great in addition because of its size, so that would be a hard thing to lose. Luckily, I don't have to choose. However, in my typical bag, I've tended to carry the 60 and the 75 more often, while leaving the 45 at home, unless I know I'll need that focal length, but I mix it up. For instance, right now, my bag has my OM-D, 12/2, 25/1.4, 60/2.8, 12-50 and 45-175.

Jordan,

Your review on Admiring Light is very good. I just received the lens and the review gave me lots of info. And the attached images were excellent.

Thank You,
Chuck
