p.1 #1 · Soul of the Ancients

This past August, I visited the White Mountains of California to photograph the famous Bristlecone Pines. Spending so much time in this grove was a great experience.

This photo shows the decaying root system of a long dead Bristlecone Pine, and a rock that has been held captive for perhaps thousands of years.

For the whole story of my trip, please check out my blog for my written journal as well as my video daily journals from the trip.

You'll get a better feel for the location and the subject of this photo. http://benhorne.wordpress.com

The dark line across the top of the image is the film sleeve. I scan the film in its sleeve to avoid scratching it.

Remarkably sharp and realistic look to this intriguing image, Ben. A fun discovery this must have been.

Are you going to be in Zion this year?

Thanks Jeffrey. I'll indeed be in Zion this year. I won't be roughing it with my setup from last year though. It's back to sleeping on the ground --- not to mention the 3 day backpacking trip with my LF gear in the days before I visit Zion. Should be fun! Will you be there this year?

Cool shot, Ben. Always fun to see your photos. That rock looks like a chunk of marble. Gonna go watch the videos on your blog. Started reading it from the top, then realized that was day 5 and I was going backwards. Good idea using the sun shade to help stay warm... almost like a space blanket.

Hey Ben,

Cool shot here. Congrats on seeing and capturing this more intimate scene, not always an easy task.

Really love the warm colors of the wood, the textures, and the contrast with the white rock. Very well seen - If it had been me, I'm afraid I would have walked right by and missed a great shot.

Ben, what an interesting shot, the detail is fantastic, it sort of looks like a birds face with the rock becoming the beak. Really neat capture ! Regards, Dean

Ben: It's a great feeling to have "the one" in the bag. And this one is mighty fine. Unique and beautiful. Well done.
