I really like the lens on my 1d2. It's almost always on it. Just got the lens back today with new firmware, but the issues (no AF any more) was really minor (happend 2-3 times in a 3-4 months).

I like it a fair bit but it's not an L prime :-) It's great value IMO at $200 but it's also not especially fast. It's pretty sharp and yeah the AF is pretty decent (on a 7D anyway). The 2 reasons I got it [First time I have ever pre-ordered] were 1) The size and 2) The price..... I would not have spend much more for it and I would not have got it if it was bigger because I have the 50f1.4 and would just use it instead. I would obviously prefer that it was f2 but it literally fits in my pocket - and I don't mean like a 24-70L fits in your pocket :-)

Bottom line, it's not going to fit a lot of people but some of us who want something decent and small it's real hard to beat.

That could get you arrested in some states!

They can attach... filter first, hood second, cap third. This will just add bulk to the lens and defeat the purpose (imho). For me, the hood offers just enough protection to keep my fingers away from the glass as I tend to manual focus after the fact... especially w/ the 5DII who's average AF leaves me a bit flat.

This lens has become my street/village lens during my more normal nature travels. It's unassuming, quick enough and just fast enough to capture people w/out being in their face. The hood is so small that many will think it a waste (money grab?), for others it will be a necessity.
cheers,
bruce

I meant with a polarizer. I'd probably dispense with the hood first if it does not block much light.

It's still cute, and I still wonder when to use it.

Great little lens. Sharp, light in weight and sharp.

I find it a fun walk around lens on the 5d2, sharper corners and smoother bokeh than I remember from my old 35 f/2 (although I really liked that lens). Its almost like there is no lens on the camera!

f/2.8 on 5d2....

That's the biggest thing for me too...the size. The camera is so small and light with that lens on there. You can bring it anywhere with you. My 40D will even fit in a cargo pocket with that lens on, though its pretty heavy to carry that way. Sharper, better color than the 50 1.8, and better OOF highlights too. Slower, yes, but IMO for portraits in the 'normal' realm this is a better lens than the 50 1.8.

I have a bunch of 3rd party pinch center caps that I bought on ebay a few weeks back. They work great. My 40mm and all my other Canon lenses now have them. A filter is no issue now.

Same here. I forgot the last time I've used 24-70. 40mm is one fine lens.

I'm heading to back to visit my folks in NYC, I'll use as a city lens... Also, when shooting wildlife with my other body, I'm always wishing I had a body and lens hanging off me for quiet moments or to capture the general landscape. I plan/hope to use the lens during these times.

I'm a nature shooter and my bag tends to have a long lens mounted to a 7D. Because I like a smaller backpack (Thinktank Streetwalker HD), I can't keep my 5DII attached to a lens, as the 7D + tele takes up the space. I can now pack the 5D w/ the 40 attached, as this lens is barely thicker than a body cap. This will allow me to grab and shoot during fleeting opportunities.

I think it is great, not exactly up to L in color and contrast but very close. For sure better than 50/1.4 for example on this.

this lens is so good it makes me wonder about the 24 f/2.8 and 28 f/2.8 that absolutely nobody is buying because the prices are absurd

i mean on paper this 40 doesn't seem to be anything *that* special, but if canon is working this kind of mojo with their new glass i'm curious how other new lenses are performing

A 40mm pancake is a simpler design than a retrofocus lens with floating elements and IS to boot.

and by the way... when you do manual focusing 40mm, you are not doing it thru mechanical gears or some helical linkage it's all elctronics. Just like when you do manual focusing on FUJI X100.

Are you shooting with specs or with lens? There is tons of samples providing enough info about, lens is very good.
