The DP2-M is probably the most terrible camera to use. Slow, quirky, terrible high ISO performance. I could go on. The proprietary software that we must use for the RAW files is also clunky and soooo slow.
But, when I get out with it and the light is good and I don't forget extra batteries , it can capture unbelievably good images. Here are a few out of camera jpg's. Not manipulated at all...

Picked up a DP3M a couple of months ago and still trying to tame the beast. Just picked up a DP2M last week since I'm a glutton for punishment. Image below is the DP3M.

I was thinking of doing the same.

In your opinion, is the DP3M a workable telephoto addition to the GR? Or is the processing workflow too complex to bother with? The DP3M doesn't look pocketable, but I'm thinking of a travel set consisting of the DP3M for tele, the GR II for moderate wide-angle and an older GR with WA adapter for wider... Did you bring the DP3M to Senegal (the above image suggests that you didn't take the photo in the US, and I saw your post in the GR thread)? Thanks.

Mark-

I've been wanting a short-tele version of the Ricoh GR for a while and settled on the Sigma DP3M (75mm equiv) after perusing this thread and seeing some of the results. The fact that it shares batteries with the Ricoh is a plus.

You ask if it's a "workable" addition to the GR...and I have to say that it's...adequate. The Ricoh is definitely much easier to use and more forgiving (and most certainly my favorite camera). The Sigma takes more work, needs more light, is slower, battery hungry and more cumbersome (literally and figuratively) than the Ricoh. But the results can be excellent. For me, the Sigma is a lot like the game of golf. I'm not very good, but when I hit the ball just right...it's nearly...orgasmic.

I did take the Sigma to Senegal but used the Ricoh 95% of the time because it just feels like a natural extension of my arm and the Sigma wasn't with me all the time. I kept the Ricoh around my neck on a lanyard and kept it in my shirt pocket so it was always available. The Sigma (although small compared to most cameras) is just a little too large to put in a pocket.

But I was impressed enough with the Sigma's results to buy the DP2M (the 45mm equiv cousin). It's much more "pocket-able" than the DP3M which has a fairly large lens. And I suspect I may end up carrying the DP2M more than the DP3M.

I only shoot RAW with all my camera so workflow isn't too much of a concern. SPP software is slow but effective.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

My first post here, I'm still experimenting. Foveon is a lot different to edit, but I'm enjoying the results. JPG Direct from SPP.
