Out of a marketing perspective, I am puzzled with Sigma's pricing. Consumers don't complain over 3K for a Sony RX1 because it has a Zeiss sticker on it, knowing the lens is made by Cosina.

Sigma tried to improve its reputation by putting together a world class lens with a unique sensor. I guess they choose the 1K price proint after their experiece with their Sigma SD1 pricing. It is a very low price for this level of technolog and image output. The camera output is not far behind a Nikon D800e with the best lens.
The Sigma DP2M lens is better

Reviving old comment. Hey, Sigma actually listened to you. You wrote that Sigma made a mistake with cheap brick look. So that is why new Sigma DP2 Quattro is of so non-brick shape. :-)

I already owned a DP2M and found a used DP3M in Japan that just arrived a couple of days ago. I have read that the color rendition on the DP3M is the best of the Merrill series, and I can say it really is so. Very accurate with no color casts that my DP2M sometimes under certain conditions. Blue skies are true blue. Sharp as heck lens, too. Just a couple of trial shots, haven't had time to give the 3M a real workout yet.

Generally if the color is nice outside, sunny, radiant etc, then the Merrill's reproduce it well. When its overcast and such, not quite as well, however, the camera can do some really nice black and white , which often suits such scenes better anyways

What problems do you see shooting in overcast conditions?
How about in low light interiors? Like in old churches or houses. Not 'available darkness' but exposures in dimly lit and shadowed areas?

Any blocking of shadows in these conditions?

It works when its overcast, don't get me wrong, but just not quite as well as when its getting nice full spectrum daylight. Accurate color is always a bit tricky with the Merrill's, and a little more so under overcast or artificial light. I think its just due to the way the sensor is designed and the way certain wavelengths are going to be more or less present, for lack of any better technical guess.

I personally don't really find it a great camera for low light photography either, blacks can block up a bit and sometimes you can get some odd color issues on long exposures. Few seconds is usually fine, but when we start talking 10-20 seconds (max is 30 by the way) it can get a little odd sometimes. Not so much increased noise, as the files stay pretty clean, but just artifacts and such can show up.

Still can give a nice file with some tweaking, but not quite the knock your socks off "wow" factor you get when shooting under bright daylight

I have a DP3M on loan this weekend, and am crushing on it, quirks and all, pretty hard. I am thinking about buying a 3 now, and getting the DP2M Quattro. Not that anyone cares.

But I'd be interested what others think about their own upgrade path. I know the 3 is generally considered superior in this gen in some ways, and has better macro capabilities, and it looks like it will have better macro capabilities in the next gen, too.
