I took my 5D3 with 21 mm Distagon and 24-105 L along with my DP2M to a local viewpoint, the Tour de Brison, here in the Ardeche yesterday to photograph recent snowfall on the Tanargue massif. I mounted the cameras on my RRS tripod and BH55 head and proceeded to record the scene. having some time I was able to try various apertures and some bracketing for later tonemapping as the DR was way high. I am currently evaluating the utility of my DSLR set up in view of the increasingly excellent results that I can obtain from much more portable options and I was interested to review the resultant images. Main conclusion? The 24-105 ( even though I feel it is a 'good' copy) just cannot live in the company of the Distagon or the Sigma. Softness, CA and muddy colours are what I see at all focal lengths in comparison to these two paragons. I'm no further forward in my decision regarding my DSLR ownership but I dont see myself using the 24-105 again for, well, much, maybe I'll give it to my kids.... What I did see is that the DP2M stands up very well against the 5D3/21mm Distagon in terms of edge to edge sharpness and lack of CA at all apertures. And I reckon the DP2M weighs less than the Distagon on it's own! I did see some green /magenta funkiness however, but nothing I can't live with.
