p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 120-300 OS: really bad start

Hi guys!
Something to share....in case somebody has had same experience.

So I got this lens yesterday morning: Sigma 120-300 OS etc., I didn't really care about the new model, I just need a sharp lens so I took it anyway.
Yesterday at lunch did some test for front/back focusing and sharpness and the lens is superb. No issues on my D300.
Yesterday evening I took the lens at home and took some shots to check it out with sb900 and the TC. No issues and super sharp. I was really impressed, didn't expect so much.
Happy I decided I would give it a try the next day, put the lens in the backpack and closed it.

Tonight I went to the park to try the lens, and....NO AUTOFOCUS.
Nothing, not a single response from the lens.
Is like the autofocus is completely off.
I can't really explain how could this happen if everything was properly working yesterday with also both the TC1.4 and 2.
The lens was not shaken at all!
All my other lenses work perfectly and focus good as usual.

I am not sure if I want to return the lens or send it back to warranty to fix it.
I am pretty sure the dealer doesn't have another copy in stock, so he won't exchange it, and even if he had one, this copy was really sharp!

What would you suggest? Any of you had the same problem?

I am so disappointed, I really like the zoom lens and the quality....
I expected some sort of problem, this is really bad. It's good we have 10 years warranty in Canada.

Thanks for reading,
G.

Check the C/S/M switch on the front of the camera.

Hit the AF switch on the lens?

On the older version of that lens it was tiny and annoyingly easy to bump.

it doesn't have an aperture ring like af-d lenses? If so is it set to max f-stop?

I bumped my 300 f4 & freaked out as the AF wouldn't work.

Thanks all guys,

I had already tried all the basic stuff, like the AF mode on the body and the AF switch on the lens, contacts are mint.
The lens is the new one, OS, which doesn't have the aperture ring.

There is nothing I can do to make it work. If I put on the body another lens everything works fine.

This happened yesterday evening, so I will go to the dealer today and send the lens in for repair.
Hopefully this won't take long, they claim to have a 48h service....let's see.

Thanks everybody
G.

I bought this lens this may, now in september i already had to send 2 lenses back for AF and OS issues. Both times the lenses were swapped for new ones.
I had a severe clicking AF and a bad working OS with the 1st one after 6 weeks.
The 2nd had terrible and inconsistent AF.
Now the 3rd, Sigma said this lens had the latest serial number.
So far so good, OS very quiet, tack sharp at F2,8, can't say anything about AF yet.
If this one breaks down again.....

It is really a nice lens, when it works....

Seriously thinking to return it.
I can't afford to miss shots on assignments.

I am really attracted by the zoom and I choose it over a Nikon 300 VR2 but at this point I might start thinking I did the wrong choice.

And what to think of this:
http://sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/sports/s_120_300_28.html

The last 1 sucked mechanically, lets make a new one!

If you have the money and can live without the zoom, get the Nikon.

I know about the new one, but it didn't bother me since the optics are the same.

Thing is that the zoom makes a big difference for me, when you shoot mammals is very very good to have one big zoom lens.
The 200-400 is too expensive and is pretty big to travel with, so is not a good option.

This one has the best focal length is very very sharp even with TCs...and it doesn't AF

I'll talk to the dealer, maybe I'll give it another go or I'll just exchange it for the Nikon 300VRII

Just back from the shop where they swapped the lens with a new one
This one seems as sharp and precise as the other one...let's see how it goes.

If I still have problems I'll return it this time.

Kudos to Broadway Cameras, in Vancouver, excellent customer support.

Nikon makes a 120-300mm f2.8 zoom now?

I am on my second copy and damn... WOW.. completely different than the first one I had. The first one I had was crap on the long end. This one, stupid fast, sharp as a tack and low light its as good as my 70-200 nikon.

If you get a good copy its a stellar lens. But it took a second try for me. Good luck with yours, I am sure it will perform! Mine has.

Sigma has pretty good customer service. Unfortunately, that lens has a history of mechanical issues. Take a look at this: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/09/lensrentals-repair-data-january-july-2012

The 120-300 has the most failures per time period according to LensRentals. It's a small sample size, but I think the data is worth looking at.

Thanks a lot for the info!

The new lens I have been given seems to work really well. Is super sharp, focuses really fast even with the 2x and doesn't seem to have any problem, for now.
I'll test it more as soon as some sun-nish day comes...

Thanks everybody
G.
