p.1 #1 · New Sigma lenses

Amidst all the 6d bashing, I thought I'd also note a couple of interesting annoucements from Sigma: a new 35 1.4 for full frame and an updated 120-300 2.8 OS. I'm particularly interested in seeing Sigma's offering taking on the 35L. While it has some quality control issues, Sigma has been making some quite nice lenses of late.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/17/Sigma-launches-three-lenses-35mm-f1-4-DG-17-70mm-f2-8-4-DC-MACRO-120-300-F2-8-OS-HSM

Particularly neat is that Sigma announced a new quality control process and is also now offering/including? a dock from which owners can connect their lenses to their computers for firmware updates. I guess they got fed up with Canon breaking their designs...

Wonder why they felt the need to update the 120-300

35/1.4 makes sense after the 50 and 85

Yes, the 35/1.4 looks interesting. Curious about its price tag.

LOVE THIS; thanks for posting! To hear that a photo company is making lenses for a specific purpose, making that purpose clear to consumers, and taking another step forward in ensuring high quality and flexibility is such a nice thing to hear.

And as a sports photographer that 120-300mm, now with weather-sealing and a very attractive cosmetic design, leave me to say 3 words: I want one

The software and USB dock sounds an interesting development. Maybe they found a way to Taylor your lens to your body.

I think it's likely a response to canon's changing their firmware to render older 3rd party designs inoperable. Some flash manufacturers have been including USB ports to address the same issue.

Or a response to the vast amount of lenses being sent in for calibration--now they may be able to bank on a DIY workaround. I wonder how many 50/1.4's and 85/1.4's came and went through those doors over the past few years...

My Sigma 50mm F1.4 & Sigma 85mm F1.4 have been fine for focusing.
no issues noted or calibration required with 5D, 5D II, 5D III

Yeah the old version is sealed (though it doesn't have a rubber ring at the mount--I've kind of been pondering on if I want to try to add one myself). hehe

And it has a nice design. That said, the new one looks nicer. The current one looks great though honestly. The big thing is the addition of the focus limiter! I wonder if we can get one added.

The downside is the tripod foot is no longer a nice handle. Boo.

Being able to adjust focus performance is a great idea. I had written off Sigma because of the focus issues, but this will be enough for me to give them another look. I guess the 35mm 1.4 is not one of their best 'EX' lenses ... so I guess it is just a standard grade lens?

I have no idea why they upgraded the 120-300 OS this early, but if that earlier version reduces in price I may well consider replacing my beloved 70-200 IS II with it (I like the 300 f/2.8 option )

None of the new lenses are "EX" branded, I am guessing with their new categories all the new lenses will have different brand names.

I've tested the 120-300 OS in a store when I was looking around for my fast telephoto zoom. Ultimately the price was the deciding factor and I went with the Canon 70-200 II. Now maybe a good chance to grab the older one if there is a significant price cut.

I believe they put a focus limit switch on it.

ugh, contemporary, art and sports categories. pretty brutal. can't they just release some good lenses and let the photographer decide what they're for. reeks of bad marketing
