p.1 #1 · Leica M10/ME discussion thread

So in anticipation to the big Leica event on Monday 17th, here's the thread where we discuss the new FF Leica novelties, whatever they are.

Rumors are talking about an M10 with 24 mp CMOS sensor, LV, focus peaking, video, external EVF. Also an economy ME which is supposed to be very close to an M9. It is also possible to see a FF mirrorless non RF body as a solution for R lens owners.

So let's keep our fingers crossed for Monday

Video feels so awkward for Leica, releasing minimalistic stuff like the M9 b/w.

Totally agreed. On one hand, it is free as it comes as a by product of LV, and will probably mean that the camera has a very fast processor, a big plus. On the other hand, I would really hate to see a video button on an M camera similar to that on a Nex 7. I hope it doesn't have one.

Well..

Actually Leica should give up doing cameras all together imo. I don't see them as camera producers with the photographers best at heart, but the hyper rich collector's.
I'm honestly not saying this as a rant or as the product of personal bias, but as a thought that has grown on me with ever limited release Leica with the albino crocodile leather and price to match.

The technology in the cameras they produce are nothing unique to them, it's bought technology. The lenses, on the other hand, are.
Zeiss, as a comparison, has realized this and do only what they are best at and in doing so they maintain a photographic creditability Leica has lost by selling all these sub performing cameras with fantasy prices. Digitally, they can't match anything potentially out there (heck, the cameras are not even weather sealed).

I fail to feel any kind of excitement for a new Leica body as I feel they themselves have no pride in the cameras they produce, but just use them to milk the select few who can afford them and feel special owning stuff other people can't.

They are drunk on their own legacy, but it will only carry so far.

Sorry, for what looks like a rant, really.

Rod, I sort of agree with you. I have no emotional attachment to Leica. The only Leica products I ever owned was the M6 and a Leica rebadged Metz flash (actually a very good one). However, no matter how outdated their cameras are, they remain unique in that they are FF M mount. The addition of LV and focus peaking will make them the dream mirrorless cams for anyone who wants to use his legacy lenses on FF. Now I hope other manufacturers will join in, because I really would prefer to avoid the financial hit of buying a Leica, but until there is another option....

Sorry but I totally disagree.
See how many good photographers using an M9. Also people who aren't rich but just love photography. See Magnum working together with leica.

I think leica is one of the few company's still thinking about peoples photography instead of making a camera doing it all for u.

And off course the technique in the camera's is unique to them, how many other digital rangefinder do u know of?

Stop seeing it as a FF mirrorless camera, its a rangefinder camera.

Oh, and if a small company earns money by selling some limited edition, why is that a bad thing?
They could also charge more for their lenses instead. Please let some rich people buy those expensive leica's giving them a change to develop great lenses and camera's for the rest of us.

Leica's cameras are not for the rest of us. Perhaps their re-badged (and stupidly overpriced) Panasonics are.

Guys, please let's not turn this thread into a Leica bashing thread. If you like I can start a new thread just for that

Let's keep this one to discuss the rumored and confirmed technical specifications of the new Leicas.

I don't really get what your after here? Rest of us = leica buyers or people intending to buy leica.

On topic, looking foreward to next monday. Not really interested in a new camera, but always nice to see how they develop.

OK, this is my prediction. M10 will have the 24MP CMOS, live view etc, but the electronics
will disappoint - as always. Attachable EVF will be exactly the same as OMD, LCD will be 600K.
There will be some bugs related to SD cards.
The camera will feel slow and not as responsive as we all wished for.
The IQ will be identical to that of RX1. Price - $8K. Will I get it? Probably... Am I gonna be jumping
up and down? No way, but there is simply no competition. A FF NEX is nowhere to be found...

Does RX1 feel way more exciting? Hell yes!

An interesting development is the ever increasing discount on the M9 and M9-P. BH is listing the M9 at 6000$ currently.

I saw ffordes were 'flogging' demo M9's for £3750. Not an bad price seeing as the best (used) ebay prices are around £3000 flat.

Are we predicting that the M10, will come with the Sony 24.3 sensor. eg. the same as the d600, rx1, a99?

The RX1 would be more exciting if it wasn't leaf shutter and someone offered a conversion service that replaced the lens with an M mount. (assuming the sensor toppings played nice with rangefinder lenses)

But then one would be looking at around $4K, which might be around the price point of a 'low cost' Leica offering.

I'm cautiously optimistic the M10 won't suck. A lot of time has passed since M8/M9 development where the electronics were outsourced to Jenoptic. Keep in mind the S2 was developed in-house at the same time as the M9, so hopefully three years will have provided Leica enough experience to at least be on-par with other offerings.

Really, it doesn't need to be technologically cutting edge.

Seems some are suggesting this, but I would have thought Leica would prefer something higher resolution. But perhaps if they're removing the AA and such it won't make much difference..
