Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai is a powerful scanner with 7200 dpi resolution. Its sharp optical system produces excellent detail in shadow areas and remarkable tonal range. A built-in infrared channel helps users remove dust and scratches on the original negatives and slides without additional post-processing. With the included IT 8 calibration slide, this powerful scanner consistently delivers accurate colors and detail.

How much and what is the basic resolution, I wonder.

If you scan full rez you should be able to get around 3200 dpi effective resolution.

So the claimed 7200 dpi is bogus?

It is the theoretical resolution and you do get 7200 dpi of smeared detail, but if you resize to 3200 the files will look very good.

@ 7200 DPI (when real) there is nothing to be scanned on the film; a solid 3200 is enough, and you save unuseful weight

The problem is you have to scan at 7200 to get the 3200. If you scan at a lower resolution you get even less effective resolution. That is more time consuming as the scans take a long time.

I agree, that's a problem.

This new scanner has the same specs as their 7600Ai does, except it's hardware/software seems more targeted/optimized for 64-bit systems. I've seen results from the 7600 and they're pretty good, quite close the the Nikon 5000 scanners. The major difference is claimed DR, the Plustek are about 3.6, Nikon's are above 4.0+

The scanner to look for is their upcoming, not released yet, OpticFilm 120
Rumored price is $2K+, a summary of it's specs and a web link are below:

OpticFilm 120
Scans 35mm film and 120/220mm film.
Supports 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 and 6x12 frame sizes.
Up to 10,600 dpi input and 5,300 dpi output for film and slides.
Dynamic Range 4.01

Hi Mark from Plustek here.

Regarding the resolution of the OpticFilm 7xxx and 8xxx scanners. These scanners use a 7200 dpi CCD. There is no interpolation to get 7200 dpi images. However, the optics of the system limit the measured resolution of the scanner. In other words, if you scan at 7200 dpi, you get a 7200 dpi file. But the scanner resolves about 4500 dpi/ppi when tested with a USAF 1951 test target. When the scanner is set at 3200 dpi, scanner resolves around 2800 dpi/ppi. DISCLAIMER: This data is from a production scanner that I have in my office and recently tested. It represents a typically scanner that you would buy from a retailer.

That is what I like about the Reflectas; they scan at around 3200 dpi at the 3600 setting.

There is a detaield review of the 8200i here:

I just received my Plustek 8200i today and love it. So if I scan at 4800, I will get an effective scan of around what then? Around 3600?

Thanks
Ben

FYI.... I am no longer affiliated with Plustek.

There is no one or correct answer to the question of what resolution should you scan at. One of the first questions you need to answer is what is the true resolution of your film + lens. Take a look at this: http://vitaleartconservation.com/PDF/affects_of_lens_quality_on_image_resolution_v3a_draft.pdf

If I remember correctly, the 8xxx scanners will scan at 7200dpi and downsample to get 4800. You can easily test this. Just time your scan at 7200 dpi and 4800 dpi.

I bought a Plustek 8200 SE a few months ago. There was a $50 rebate, so the price including shipping from B&H was about $310. For $310 this is a very good scanner. I generally scan at 3600dpi (TIFF), which gives some very clean scans. Sometimes it takes about 2 minutes to scan 3600dpi (on an recent version I-mac), with the infrared and USM activated. Sometimes it takes just a few seconds; doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. The IR dust removal function works well, and I like the default USM software settings. Haven't tried 7200dpi, yet. Still learning the vagaries of 3600dpi. 3600dpi gives better scans than 2400dpi (at least on screen). It gives as good or better (better mostly) scans at 3600dpi than the Nikon LS-2000 (2700dpi) I used years back. I think I can get good prints from this scanner, and I'll post some film images scanned by it on the forum in time.

I don't have the Silverfast AI software or the test target slide, which is fine with me. The Silverfast software is OK, but kind of unpredictable at least as far as getting linear results. I've been very satisfied with the SE version and it's cost to me. For $310, I'd buy another if I burn this one up. The customer service is good, BTW.
