I guess it is the real thing. It is exactly the body the earlier leaked (sharp) pictures show.
I think the blurry picture comes from resizing it from thumbnail format.

Why not? At nearly half the price it should have some more lesser features than just the MPs, D800 offers ...

Of course it should have less features than the D800....my questioning is WHY was the top shutter speed one of the features to take a hit.

It might make sense according to Nikon or you for that matter, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Right. Nobody must like anything.
If they show it at photokina I will try to get my hands on and if, I will tell you.

Get: ISO 100, (presumably) good ISO performance
Lose: 1/8000

That seems fair to me...

Very cool if it's true. <-- hey I just busta a rhyme!

Kevlar CF shutter and only 1/4000th speed? Why?

Note to D700 owners: SELL SELL SELL!

Someone made a good point on the Nikonrumors comments. Base ISO is 100 compared to D700 ISO 200 so 1/4000 is the same on D600 as 1/8000 on D700. Of course ISO 100 WITH 1/8000 would be a little bit better but at least it's not WORSE than the D700 in its minimum exposure at a given aperture when you consider the ISO difference.

Right, I get the whole 'trade off' of iso100 and 1/4000. But I want both. I would like to be able to shoot wide open in brighter conditions than I can currently with my D700. And I don't do filters.

Life is full of compromises, but I'm just a bit dissapointed in this one aspect. And I don't understand it. I doubt a shutter that can do 1/8000 is any more expensive than one that can only do 1/4000.

It's OK everyone, I'll make do.

At this point, seeing what's been released, I will be looking for a nice clean D700 to backup my current D700.

The only reason I (outdoor and wildlife photographer) could see getting one is the 25% increase in resolution. I admit it would be nice, but it's not critical in my work, and it still would not replace my D700 (I say that not having seen any image quallity tests, so it could change).

I must also admit that right now I would not commit to a first year purchase of ANY new high end Nikon body unless it had been given the same hand-tuning and checkout treatment that the pre-release units got when they went out to those pros who did the D800 advertising shoots.

I'm pretty psyched... I've never been one to watch the body announcement tape ticker before but I think this will be my time. Setting myself up for inevitable dissapointment when the next update to the Nikon 1 system is the only thing announced...

But I did unload my D300 and D700 late last week so I'm ready to pounce if its true. If not I guess I'll do some soul searching on the D800!

One thing that I've had on my mind about the smaller body, remembering my D80 is that I loved having the grip, whereas on my D300 and D700 I never felt it was as necessary. Sometimes useful during a wedding but never for walk around. It would be a really nice touch if the D600 and D7K used the same grip the way the 300/700 combo did... give you a DX/FX combo with common memory, batteries and grip.

Of course then Nikon wouldn't be able to charge $300 for a new single use accessory. jeesh!

why?

1/200 flash sync / Less frames per second / Also condiering I often take my D700 easily pass 1/250

Nikon Rumors does list the possibility of a D710 later this year. Now that would have me selling assuming its just a D700 with a 24 mp sensor.

Psst... the D800 ads were shot with a Canon 5d2.

D800 Ad Fiasco

... otherwise Nikon would've quickly realize the issues much earlier. User Testing FTW!

Guess Nikon see's it as, if you want higher SS then buy a D800. Somethings have to be cut to save cost I guess.

Save cost huh...interesting that the D7000 goes to 1/8000.
