p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · HS Football - High ISO with HSS Flash

I tried to duplicate what Ralph Thompson did last week with the high iso and hss flash. The lighting at this field stinks. The end of the 2nd qtr on, I was at iso 16000 with the flash set at -1 1/3. The shutter speed was 1/800 and I was still 2/3 stops underexposed. CC and suggestions welcomed. I'm just trying to get better!

I was using a 5d III, Sigma 120-300 OS, and 580ex II

1. ISO 16000, f/3.2 1/800

Personally, I think these look very good given the conditions. I'm also still playing around with HSS. Last weekend I tried keeping my ISO down around 5000 or 6400, but this meant that the flash had to work harder, the photos had stronger shadows, more color and exposure variation from front to back, etc. I just don't like the looks of them.

I still find that I prefer the look of high ISO plus HSS fill flash over lower ISO and dominant flash (with or without HSS). Of course, you've got to have a body that does well at high ISO.

This week I'm going back to the technique you show here.

Although I've never shot higher than 10,000, shooting RAW/ ETTR (1/3 or 1/2) & using LR will help with an exposure boost of a stop in post & eliminate red eye easily. Also, -2 HSS & shooting from a kneeling position helps hide the shadows (example 3) from flash. At any rate, you got some shots, well done. At that ISO getting anything is a dodgy proposition IMO.

I think you're off to a great start. Not seeing the field you were shooting, kind of limits some of my input. It sounds pretty dim if you are at 16K and still at 1/800! That being said, aside from a little noise in places, I think you did fine. These look better than a lot I've seen. The player's eyes in three still look a little "off" to me. Sometimes you'll get some "zombie eye" after a red-eye correction. If you see that, you have two options: 1.try to fix it, I've burned, dodged, clone stamped and more to try to fix it, but I usually revert to option 2. Delete it....

I've shot some stellar action that has ended up deleted because I just couldn't fix the eyes. Last week I mounted my flash even lower on my monopod, a full two feet below the lens axis... Finally I got less redeye!

Keep at it! Your'e almost there.

I think these are fine, but got me to thinking about the "old days" when there were no 16,000 iso bodies etc. You had a roll of film that could maybe be "pushed" to 1600 iso. It was literally the "dark ages" of photography!

Thanks for posting the photos and settings, as I'm going through my learning curve on Flash Football Photography at poorly lit fields as well.

P3200 pushed to 6400 or 8000 via Tmax developer at 100F for about 2mins. Now that was the "dark ages". Shooting football on deadline and having negatives that turned white 10-minutes after you printed them. Now those were the good'ol days.
