p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Same-day Slideshows: JPGs or RAW

I've been a 2nd shooter the last two weekends in which the company does same-day slideshows at the reception. In both cases, they asked me to shoot in JPG.

I understand it's a lot quicker to turn these things around to present in a slideshow. Just curious what others on this forum do, of those who do the same-day slideshows. One of my concerns is whether I'm losing the quality that allows me to blow up pictures. I haven't shot in JPG for so long, I'm just not sure.

Thanks, Ron

When we used to do this we just used the RAWs and processed on site. I would imagine jpeg would be faster.

Did this one time for a client. JPG is a lot faster when you have a early deadline.Still finished it with only a couple minutes to spare. Shoot JPG + RAW and you can select only JPG files to copy for the slide show. Then you have your normal RAW to process.

Jpg + Raw. I'd process 20-30 raws quickly if time, otherwise 2 second touchups on jpg files

JPG + RAW. Yep, that makes sense. Thanks, all.

I don't know how folks have time for this, I barely have time to do what I need to do without that craziness.

Exactly, if I had that much extra time I would use it for more photos.

It's tough...impossible some many days. Having two people helps, but even that does not mean we can do it.

When I've done it, I have my assistant download the cards and import them for me while I'm shooting intro and dances. When we sit down to dinner it's ready to go and I scroll through them and pull 20 or so for the slideshow. It's not always possible, but you would be surprised where you find the time when you've got someone to do the prep work on it. 5star-ing files in the camera as you shoot them is ideal as well.

I usually edit mine during dinner and download cards when we go from wedding venue -> reception (if they're in separate places)

I just don't see this generating me that much business, and it seems to plant a "I can edit 20-25 photos instantly, so you'll have your wedding in no time" seed.

Earlier this year I've done several same day slideshows.

I shoot raw+jpeg, tag images in-camera using "Lock" button as I shoot (or every time I get a 5min break while waiting for something, or when moving from one location to another) and then when everyone sits down for dinner I copy tagged jpegs only into LR, applying one preset which bumps up contrast a little bit, and hit "Play Slideshow". Takes about 5 mins to do. Impact is tremendous, I've received many many compliments and given out a lot of business cards due to these.

Because there is no editing involved, I had to learn to shoot really well in-camera. I owned my D700 for about 3 years now and this is the first year when I felt comfortable enough to do this. Couple of months ago I upgraded to D800 which threw me off big time and I'm now re-learning to feel it the same way I did D700. Not sure how long it'll take, I struggle a bit with its LCD/white balance/color correlation.

But yes, to answer your question - RAW+JPEG is the best way to go.
