p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bought a Nikon 17-55. Show me what it can do

So I finally bit the bullet and bought a Nikon 17-55 as a replacement to my 18-70 that I have had since I first bought a DSLR back in 2006 and has been with me through D50, D2H and D300. It finally got too much use and now only zooms out to 24mm.

I was looking at the Sigmas, Tokina and Tamron f/2.8s but decided they were all poor in comparison even to the 18-70 - slow, noisy focusing and badly made. So I bought a 17-55 second hand from ebay that will arrive in a week. It was more than I wanted to pay for a lens and now I'm wondering whether it will be worth it.

So can you convince me that I made the right decision by showing me your best shots with the 17-55?

No, YOU show us what it can do
Start by shooting it wide-open then go from there. Take some in-close shots as the lens has a pretty close MFD.

My one "iconic" shot I don't know where it is as my website is no longer...

Let me find it.

EDIT: Found it!!!

This is bokeh!

It's a pretty versatile lens... I'll post a few samples from different "types" of shots in the next several posts showing how I generally use it...so you can get an idea of general use results...

it is a good lens.
little expensive for DX, but it is always photographer who makes or breaks the photo, not the lens, especially as slow as 2.8 one

Well the 18-70 is a stellar lens when you consider it's a 7+ yr old kit lens that frequently sells for less than $200. But upgrade is way over due for you.

I'll see what shots I can dig up from the 17-55, but the real treat is the build quality. I've owned a handful of Nikon's pro level lenses and even the current models don't have the armored build of the 17-55. If you drop it on a tile floor, it may break a tile or two but the lens should be fine.

It's a stellar lens, that's for sure. Haven't used mine since I bought manual Zeiss, but still keeping it because it's my only autofocus lens. The only downside it's the size. It's big, I found too big for street photography or for casual shooting.

+1

I fell backwards over a brick wall while shooting a wedding, did a lovely head over heals and whacked my 17-55 on a rock. The MF ring got a dent and won't turn, lens still shoots great. No misalignment, no focus issues. It's a weapon.

Some beautiful shots in here! Mine can't compare, but will add a few samples to show the sort of things I've enjoyed using this lens for.

Has been a very trusty lens at various events I've been to:

Been perfect for my urbex adventures

Very much enjoyed taking it walking with me

And was the perfect lens to have along on a 5000km roadtrip across Australia

Sorry for so many photos, but it really is a great lens! Unfortunately (in some ways :P ) having just bought a D800, I'm looking to move mine to make way for a 24-70, but it would be the first lens I bought if I were to go back to DX! I'm sure you'll be very happy

It's absolutely ridiculous how sharp this lens is. Wide open, it is just as sharp as my primes and my friend's primes. I've shot a lot and I've never seen a zoom lens this unrelentingly sharp. I will sorely miss this if I move to full frame. The sharpness is legendary, I tell ya.

Lovely photos everyone

I've been very lucky and the lens arrived today, a lot earlier than I expected!
So I went and had a wander taking a few photos. There are all straight out of the camera, just converted from NEF to jpeg.

The Wales Rally GB is in town setting up shop ready for the weekend racing coming up.

edit: Forgot to add: Love the lens! It's so contrasty and the images it makes are lovely. Only issue is the zoom ring is very close to the camera body with the grip on the camera and it's a little stiff. But I can live with that.

I got and used pretty much all the lens that has mention here. After I got the 17-55, I can only say "WOW" what a lens.
