Really? The 300mm f/3 IS looks to be smaller. It could just be deceiving though. I'll give it a try.
thanks!
I have both the 70-200 f4L IS and 300 f4L IS and they use the same tripod collar/foot...I still have one attached to each cause my hands don't work great and I'm lazy
Where they differ is the front end, 67mm threads vs 77mm...that may be why the 300 seems bigger, it is and a bit more front heavy!

Hi Jerry,
Can you confirm when you get home? I think the two are not compatible because if I remember correctly, the 70-200mm f/4 IS body does not have those metal rivets to guide the tripod collar on while the 300mm IS does.
Sure, I'm home but without help right now (I'm disabled, paralyzed from the neck down) but my carer will be here this afternoon and we'll check them and I'll re-post...
PS. They are different, canon collars are ring A II (W) and ring B (W), I've a collar from opteka and fotodiox that work on both as well as the 400 f5.6L; but they adjust....
My mistake, if you buy the canon brand collar you'll need two and yes, no rivets on the 70-200, had not noticed
I don't have the 70-200 f2.8 to compare...
