I noticed that the two had a slightly different MF/AF switch. The UR date code one was protruding while the US version was ribbed. Just found it strange that the design of the lens would change. It's something I wasn't aware of and thought it'd be worth sharing. Maybe Canon had a slight redesign during the production of the 16-35mm version 1. Many Canon USM lenses have been updated during their production life from the older raised switches to the newer ribbed, flat ones. The change is so minimal as not to be identified with a I or II. Presumably the change was based on feedback from the klutzy users who tend to accidentally move the older type of switches. It's pretty common to make minor cosmetic and internal changes to lens models during the life of their production. Perhaps Canon located a better supplier for a component or tweaked the switch because customers complained it was prone to catch on clothing. I recall the EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM switched from 5 to 7 blade diaphragms without any fan fair or announcements.
