p.1 #1 · 28/1.8 or 24/1.4?

Need a "travel prime" that has a reasonably wide focal length and a reasonably fast aperture. Based on those two requirements, the 28/1.8G should be "good enough" and its lighter weight is a big plus.

But I really try to get lenses that are optically and functionally very good, hence the question: just how much better is the performance of the 24/1.4? Distortion, bokeh, AF speed... everything. Should I suck it up and buy the $2K lens that weighs twice as much, or is the $700 lens that is light and small good enough? Put another way, is the 24/1.4 $1300 and twice the weight worth of "better" than the 28/1.8?

Thanks for any comments. All this is for use on D800 body while traveling. People, landscapes, interiors, whatever.

Hey Rodolfo -

I have both and the 24 is nicer, no doubt about it. It's not only faster, it's a touch sharper and I think (with my admittedly limited use so far) it may handle distortion a bit better. I think AF speed is about the same - honestly, never really paid attention

Now - is it $1300 better? Not so sure about that. The 28mm is really sharp too (still not quite up to 24 1.4 levels), nice and compact, and lighter. It's a tough call.

If you're looking for the best possible performance, than 24mm all the way, if you're looking for a close second, then 28mm.

Hmm - not sure if I was actually any help at all.

PS - If I could only keep one I'd personally hang onto the 24mm

I also own both. While I love very much 24/1.4 my copy of 28/1.8 is brilliant. When travelling I go mostly with 28/1.8 and 85/1.8 and I could not be happier. For very important events I use 24/1.4 and Sigma 85/1.4... but I feel that I can do almost equally well with the 1.8 combo.

If I'll need a lens mostly for travel my pick would be 28/1.8. Size, weight, cost and FOV are a plus for me.

hands down the 24 1.4. It can do anything. Portraits, streets, landscapes (wide enough, over the 28mm at least) It's my fav lens and i'd never give it up.

Rodolfo,
I used the 24 1.4 on my last trip to Italy and it never came off the camera. I ended up using it for the complete trip. I find the IQ on the 24 1.4 to be one of Nikon's best lenses. I tried a friends 28 1.8 and yes it's a great lens, but you wont see me getting rid of my 24 1.4 anytime soon.

Thanks, Michael! Thanks to everyone else for the comments as well.

Budget is thankfully not a concern; I can afford either one. My issue is that I'm always heavily biased towards best-in-class products, and that's clearly the 24/1.4. But I'm not much of a wide guy -- my most-used focal lengths are more like 200+ -- so I'm not sure of how much use it would get in the long term. Then there's the little voice inside my head that says "you don't shoot wide often enough, you're missing a tool, and there's more you can learn that'll make you a better shooter".

Lighter, smaller, and much cheaper argues in favor of the 28, especially for travel and a lens I don't use that often. But I print large, and "best" is a big word for me: I'd rather work hard to learn something well than do it "fine". And so I chase my tail.

In this particular case, I'm going to Barcelona for 10 days. It's strictly a family trip: spend time with my wife, and also travel with my father who's 72 and probably doesn't have that many more trips left in him. Simpler is better... this is not a shooting trip. I'm very tempted to take a walk on the wild side and travel only with the 24/1.4. That would certainly provide me with a crash course in wide shooting while not getting in the way of the family.

But then the little voice says, "What if you need 200mm?"

Rodolfo,
Once you put the 24 on and walk through the streets of Spain, you will quickly get into the mindset of shooting wide. It can be as addicting as shooting with the SuperTeles. I also love to print big, and have huge prints in my office that I change out often, and that's one of the reasons I love the 24 1.4. The IQ that lens produces is best in class.

Oh, I had a 105mm with me on my trip to Italy and it never came out of my backpack. So I doubt you'll want a 200

Rodolfo Paiz

I'm with trenchmonkey on this matter.

Years of nothing but good zooms on all my other cams (Canon & Nikon). But since the 800e, wanted a decent wide prime to further exploit resolution & crop potential. So the 28 f/1.8G has nicely filled my expecations with much less bulk and a nice price in the bargain.

Aesthetically speaking, 24 and 28 are two totally different FL for telling your visual stories. You need to decide which FL you use most first.

I use 700mm the most. 400 is next, then 700. Then whatever the 70-200 covers, with and without a TC. Everything else is a rounding error so far.

Family trip and street sweeping you say? I'd get the 24mm, augment with the 60mm if you want to. Simple kit and will cover just about anything you'd encounter in Barcelona. Beware of pickpockets and have fun

I've decided to push myself in order to grow a little. So far, I'm thinking of taking only one D800, 24/1.4, and one flash, plus maybe a small tripod. Later on I'll see if the 60 or something else gets thrown in the bag as well.

I feel vaguely treasonous to be leaving the 70-200 behind...

if you want to push yourself, how about just the D800, 24 1.4, and a solo 4 gig SD card

For travel... No question required.... The 28mm is killer for the weight and price! It is simply awesome.
