Very interesting. Tim from Carry Speed had mentioned this idea fleetingly when I had visited his office regarding their new carry strap, but I had no idea this was an actual product.

Have a look at this video testing the magnets strength:

Well, apparently it's quite safe. I suppose Canon has put a proper shielding in their cameras since they have to go through security like Xray at the airport and that wand people use to find metal object on you.

Another thing to note is that magnets are completely safe to use around LCD screens and your SDHC or Compact Flash media cards.

You're probably thinking of floppy disks from the past, or hard drives. Flash memory isn't affected by magnets.

Chances are that most users won't own that same camera 3 years from now.

Cameras yes, filters are reusable and lasts longer. I am using most of my BW filters for over 5 years already. Again, it is clever idea but not as practical to me. Same as my iPad magnetic covers ...

That is a nifty idea! I'm happy with my screw-on CPL. No need to replace it!

The magnet will be fine. The adhesive is a greater concern.

-----------
Soft iron magnets can lose their magnetism fairly quickly but these are probably rare earth and those are quite stable for decades.
This seems similar to those magnets Apple is using for iPad covers and that will also be used with the W8 tablets.

I've got one of the magnetic filters.

Here's the filter pulled apart.

There are 7 pieces that make up the filter:

*Polarising Element.
*Clear Element.
*Ring Seal.
*Rear Filter Ring.
*Magnet.
*Magnet Housing Ring.
*Outer Ring.
