My wife and I live in New Mexico, very close to Bosque del Apache NWR and only 145 miles from Mexico. The hummingbirds have been migrating through here on their way to Mexico when the first rufous and calliopes arrived back on July 16th. The calliopes have long since left along with the adult male rufous, however we still have a pretty good group of adult rufous females and juveniles along with the local broadtail and black-chinned varieties.
Our night time temps are still just above 60F and that will hold them until it drops below that magic number. Then the rufous will be gone. Fortunately for us, we get to watch the latter two breeds until the first part of October before they, too, will head for Mexico.
