'But whenever pixels are moved around, sharpness suffers, there is no silver bullet.'
My thoughts exactly, and I point readers to this piece on 'contrived' and quite extravagant distortion, designed to be fixed in post (in-cam or RC), seemingly factored into lens design parameters:
Sony do something similar with the 16-50/2.8 zoom, I believe..for CA control as well. I am old school myself, I feel if you give the designers too many degrees of freedom they will eagerly grasp them.
You are shooting with a computer for a computer, and it may get worse than this over time.

Thanks Mark. New 14-24 ... and ... Zeiss 21 on the way tomorrow. Don't ask. At least I can do a comparison over the weekend. FYI: Amazon is running 24 months interest free on select lenses that are purchased directly from them. Free money is always nice.
Awaiting the report. I have owned the 21mm on canon and now own the 14-24mm on nikon. My d800 stresses out the 14-24mm corners but it is still very sharp.
Sorry guys... A couple of days after getting the 14-24 and Zeiss 21mm I had an offer to trade my D700 for a D3s. I couldn't pass it up. I'm awaiting delivery tomorrow then I should have some time to see how each lens performs.
MikeW, thanks for the heads up. Looks like i can't buy from thecamerastore online so I'll have to give them a call. I bought a lens on ebay but it turned out to be a total dud. If I can get thecamerastore to ship to the US this may prove very helpful.
It looks like popflash.com has a Distagon 21mm in stock for Nikon if anyone is interested. I picked up one off Ebay last night from them. Does anyone know where I can find a 82mm filter ring adapter for Cokin Z? Anybody want to sell me one? :-)
