I have tried couple options to get the highest res 2560 x 1440 on my U2711 but so far I can only get 1920x1200 max with mini dispaly port to DVI cable, other than that I use HDMI connection and didn't really show res on this (1080i or p) do you think HDMI is the same highest res? I have my Macbook Pro lid closed.

I have the U2711 monitor but I'm using it with a PC.
i tried using the monitor at the highest rez 25600 and tried every adjustment possible to make the type in all the programs readable with no help. I couldn't read the type it was so small. On a PC you can go into the display setting of the operating system and put in the resolution you want, I don't know how mac's work but that's how it's done on a PC in the operating system software.
I use the 19200 setting and am very happy with the resolution of the monitor.

Don't know if this was of any help.
Best to you,
Barry

On Mac pretty much the same, I go to display settings and the highest res I can get is 1920 with DVI cable, with HDMI only showing 1080 i/p.

I don't know much about Macs, but it could be that the max resolution of the GPU is 1920x1200. Also, it could be the DVI not being able to go higher than 1920x1200. Not sure about HDMI, I would think that it could go as high as what the GPU is capable of.

The GPU is capable for 2560x1600, and I think I've found the solution which is connection cable has to be mini display port to display port.

Two options:

1) Use a display port cable; or

2) Use a dual-link DVI cable. A single link DVI cable is only able to transfer 1920 x 1080 resolution but a dual link cable can support much higher resolutions (I forget the maximum).

Ok, that USB port on dual link cable, what is that for? I thought this only for apple display.

Yeah, the USB on that cable would be superfluous. I just googled "displayport dual link dvi adapter," saw an Apple product, and copied the link. I should of looked at that more closely.

Well, a mini display to display port most likely the answer. I have bought one on amazon for $10, way cheaper than that dual link apple cable.

I use mini displayport to display port adapters for all my stuff - since most monitors come with the displayport cables. But sometimes the cheaper adapters from places like monoprice can be more of a headache than a dedicated cable.

Well, it's not really adapter but the actual cable with mini display on one end and display port on the other so I guess that helps to avoid any issues.
