Is that the right identification?

Looks like a Cecropia caterpillar to me. A nice find.

That is the closest that I have seen but he didn't have all the little spikes. Colours look right and even the bumps on him look right though.

I think you have a picture of a caterpillar close to spinning it's cocoon. If you notice the last pictures in the link, the older caterpillars lose the black spikes. The size indicated in your picture on the hand shows me it is older. It turns into a beautiful moth.

Darn, we considered keeping it but didn't know what to feed it. We have been successful in the past with others that are far more common and it was great learning for the kids. We had this one for a day trying to build a little habitat for it but it was not eating so we put it back where it was found. Would have been nice to see what it looked like as a moth.

Here is a link for a pic of the adult. As a kid, I was successful in having a couple spin and hatch into adults. They are impressive.

Very nice, wish I could have kept it. Ah well, better to leave it to do its thing.

That genus has some super cool caterpillars. You've captured it well.

Scale might look a little larger then it is in the pic as that is my 7 year old boys hand. But he was as far around as my thumb and a good 2.5 to 3 inches in length. Would have made a tasty snack if you were lost in the woods. By those colours I'm thinking he might be poisonousness.
