Hi everyone,

Hopefully this is the right place to post. I'm a Nikon guy but today I picked up an AE-1 film body and FD 28 f/2.8 while I was poking around at a garage sale. Popped in some film and new battery when I got home, and everything seems to work fine except that the shutter will not come down after I hit the shutter release. The only way for the shutter to drop back down is to press the battery check button.

Any ideas what's wrong, how to fix it, or if it's worth fixing? Thanks all.

Maybe pull the film out and try to shoot it dry. Could be that it has been sitting for a long time and needs exercise. That said, the AE-1/AE-1P cameras did have a tendency to develop shutter problems (happened to me with my AE-1P eons ago). When I worked in photo retail, we took in camera trade-ins and always checked the Canon A series cameras for 'shutter squeal,' which was a telltale sign of likely problems.

It might just need an overhaul, but it would be cheaper to buy one that is problem free.
