p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Promotional shoot for offroad race team

I haven't posted for a while, been crazy busy. Here's a sampling from a recent job producing promotional use images for an offroad team. They wanted headshots, bike/rider shots, team photos, as well as various action shots. They were well received by the team, hope you guys like them as well. As always C&C welcome.

3. Wicked backlighting, lost contrast, but for some reason I really like it. Maybe because it's so different?

7. This is with my 28 1.8G. What a fabulous little plastic lens.

Very nice, really like #2 and #7. So much opportunity for great photos shooting this type of material with all the "texture" or dirt, mud etc.. if that is what you want to call it .

Well done!

IMO you pretty much nailed the action, exposure and post processing on the images you posted above. The more I look at #3 the more I like it, maybe not as a team action photo for an autograph poster, but as a motocross action photo it works.

By comparison #6 needs just a little more PP to meet the standard you set in the other images especially when you compare it to #4 (of the same rider.)

Hats off to your overall exposures in 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 as (in my monitor) they've held detail in both your "whites" and "blacks," which is easier said than done in any "offroad" racing action photography. Exposing for that sweet spot, just within the dynamic range of your camera's sensor, is always a challage outside the studio, GREAT JOB!

For the first are you post processing to get the light rider and dark back grounds or have you fired a flash to get that effect?

Thanks, and I agree, so much opportunity when shooting very fast riders. It's always fun.

Steve, thanks for the detailed feedback, I appreciate you taking the time. I've enjoyed your ISDE coverage, you definitely know off road!

When shooting this session, I primarily looked for spots where there was sunlit spot within the trees and exposed for the rider and let the backgrounds fall where they may. Fortunately we shot just as the sun was going down so it wasn't terribly harsh. That soft light really made it work.

As for number 3, I was almost looking directly into the setting sun through the foliage. I guess because it looks so different is why I like it. It's definitely not one of the best, just one of the most unique from that evening. To be honest, I wasn't expecting the camera to be able to track focus. It was just one of let's just see what happens deals. Lol

Again, thanks for detailed input. I digested everything you noted.

In this first image, I underexposed the background by about 1 stop, then brought the bike/rider back to a good exposure with 2 speed lights, one on each side of the frame. I used a pair of 36" shoot through umbrellas as modifiers. I positioned the bikes and riders in this specific spot as there was a nice spot in the woods where the sun was shining through and used that as a natural rim light. For maximum separation, I shot at f/2 and relied on HSS for the flash.

I shot the head shots, bike/rider shots, and team shots in the woods because that's where the majority of where they race when doing Enduros and Hare Scrambles.

Thanks for the detailed response, that is a lot of help. It was actually the second image I was thinking about but I assume that you were using a similar setup for the lighting.

Yes, the second shot was similar - underexposed by at least one stop then filled with flash. The biggest difference in that shot is that I used three speed lights. Two were on stands above eye level with modifiers to give a more even light over the bike and rider, and the third was on the ground with no modifier pointing upwards at about 30 degrees to put light directly in his eyes. I think it's overly dark around the front wheel where it meets the ground, but I believe that puts additional focus on the riders eye. Ideally, I would have used another flash with a snoot or similar modifier and focused the light on the ground/dirt coming off the front wheel.

Thanks, I don't think that the wheel is to dark at all as every thing in the images draws you right to his eye, you can't help but look there.
