Something a bit different.

These are actual reflections (i.e. not PS manipulated) from a local pond. Struck me as thinking what it may have been like in the days before photography, to sit and study such a scene, with brush in hand ... as I sat and watched the ripples come and go with the changing wind. I wondered if this is how "watercolors" began?

An ode to the masters of yore, sans photoshop.

Hi Rusty. This is an image I would never attempt. Not because it is not beautiful, but because I am such a dad blamed specialist.

I think you pulled it off great. If printed on mat paper and hung without glass it might be taken as a painting. This is not the same as calling it painterly.

I generally prefer a different aspect ratio for verticals, but this one works as is.

If you look half way up, in the light part of the water and above the dark patch, there is a white speck right and a black spec left. Probably floatsom. I would clone them out and do nothing else.

Thanks Ben,

Yes ... the flotsam is definitely present in the two areas you mentioned.

Funny thing @ that ... my "purist" vein (and you didn't think I knew what the word meant ) is popping up a bit on this one. I'm torn at taking them out vs. leaving them in, in the vein of "no photoshop" / "au natural". I kinda wish there was a "big leaf" ... or that dang turtle I was hoping to get in the scene (which just wouldn't follow my directions ) on the surface to help reveal some "non-reflection" element.

I'll likely take a look to see if I can pull them out in a way that I don't "screw up" the rhythm of the ripples (plausible realism). I was curious how noticeable they were ... but with the discriminating eyes we've got around here in the land of the "micro-nit" ... what else would I expect except for it to be noticed.

BTW ... this will be a competition piece for a very specific photographic theme @ "Interpretive Representation of Artist's Sculpture in its Environment" ... or something close to that. It'll be 1 of 3 pieces being submitted for jury selection by the Mitchell Museum representing their Sculpture Park. With that in mind ... thoughts @ printing ... matte, canvas, metallic, etc. should it make it past the jury selection.

FYI ... the dialogues we have here ... I try to carry them with me. Travis' recent thread really resonated with me @ "too subtle" for competition as we all loved his image, yet sought to understand the judges response.

Ahh, to clone or not to clone, that is the question. As you say, your vision is what matters here.

Write sweet words. You never know if you'll have to eat them.

Good luck on the contest. Not sure on the pricing. I am kind of tempted to flip it personally. I like the image a lot. - Paul

Beautiful abstract, yes, even painterly quality.
I'd clean the nits. This is already interpretive, so preserving those bits of reality only makes sense if you really like them.
Yes to canvas, yest to matte, no to metallic. And though I have never printed on it, maybe even watercolor paper or an exotic bamboo or other textured surface.
Good luck. Its fine work, Kent. Really quite fine!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input and feedback.

I've got some reasonable hopes for this one ... but ... well, you know competitions.

It'll likely be around a month before jury results come out ... judging about a month or so after that.

Like Ben, I can't do these...try as I might, I just never seem to get them right. I think it is a great piece to sit and stare at, that it will have more connection to those judging it will help. I don't know what the reflection is, but still like it, they should know the reflection, and should like it more...but then again..they are judges...who knows what they think.

Given the painterly abstract impressionistic feel...I would go with canvas, I think the subtle texture of canvas would work well here...

And I would clone the two bits of distraction, I did not see them at first, but after Ben pointed them out, I can't stop looking at them.

Very nice! I think it should do well. Agree on the clone and Karen's paper recommendation.

Thanks again,

I'll definitely work on the clone later this week after I get some other fires tended to, as it seems to be essentially consensus to do so. Paper/canvas decision otoh has time to decide yet ... well, I have to get juried in first.

I just think its a great find, or to see it visually. I imagine I must have walked right by literally dozens or even hundreds of these without ever seeing them at all.
Reflections are one of my favorite subjects too, great find and great image as well.

I'm not even sure If I should even post a message here, since its such a good image.
I was just thinking how or why can I crituque an image which is so much better tham most of mine ?

Oh ... that's easy ... I do it all the time, when people ask for my opinion.

Being able to see something, isn't predicated on being able to do it ... although, the two do harmonize well when one can do both.

If you see it ... say it. The point of asking for C&C is to get others' (from all walks) eyes & thoughts on the matter ... not to question their pedigree or capabilities. As long as it is sincere & honest in the vein of helping your fellow FM members ... it's all good ... even if it it's way different or misses the mark by a country mile from what the OP was looking for. The OP gets to choose what to "use or lose" ... and after all, he "asked" for it.
