p.1 #1 · Serial Numbers...or lack of

I'm taking my first foray into L glass and have been looking for a 70-200mm L 2.8 II. I have seen some advertised as not having a serial number. What does this mean? Some kind of gray market or fake? A little confused....Thanks in advance.

Maybe no date code? The lens should have a serial number somewhere. Mine is on the barrel.

Must be a misunderstanding. The newer 70-200mm f/2.8 II do not have date codes, but they should all have a serial number.

Unless the it was stamped on the mount and the mount was replaced or stamped on a part that was replaced. My 24 L MKII the serial number is stamped on the mount.

That said if it is a new lens the serial number should appear somewhere

It means don't believe everything you read.

All Canon lenses have serial numbers.

All Canon EF bodies and lenses are serialized. So, it should not be absent.

True, but several of my EOS the SN on the bottom wore off from contact with my hand (no scratches or rubs). It's merely printed on a plastic label not very durable. Also, when the rear mount of a lens is repaired the new part lacks whatever date code was originally imprinted. However, it is burned into the ROM so no biggie if must know what it is.
