p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A week of bird photography in Hungary

Hi

Back in the beginning of June I spent a week photographing birds in eastern Hungary. It was a superb week spent with amazing birds in a beautiful country. A very small selection below to give you a flavour. All the photos were taken from the network of hides in the Hortobagy National Park.

If you would like to see more and how they were taken then there is a detailed day by day account on my blog Wildlife Photographic Journals

1) Preening Red-footed Falcon.

2) The apparently rare sight of mating European Rollers

3) Another rare sight of a Nightingale out in the open

4) A scarce bird in the UK but common in Hungary, a male Hawfinch

5) An unexpected visitor to the woodland bird bathing pool

6) Great White Egret Take-off

7) Grey Heron 1 - Small carp 0

8) The rainbow colours of a Black Stork

9) Young Black Stork coming in to land

10) White Stork 1 - Small carp 0

11) Feeding Spoonbill

12) Pygmy Coromorant drying off

13) One of my favourite birds of the trip the Squacco Heron

14) Another Squacco in breeding colours

15) Marsh Harrier drifting over the reeds

16) Night Heron

17) Bee-eater coming in to land

18) Young Hoopoe begging for food from adult

19) Pre-mating gift from male to female bee-eater

20) One last bee-eater to make a nice round number of images

Cheers

Rich

A super set Rich. I started picking favorites, but there were just too many. I will say that I have never seen a Squacco Heron, and it's quite beautiful, (and very well captured) ~ Ron

Many thanks for the comments which are appreciated. I really like what eastern Europe has to offer in terms of bird photography, so much so that I have already booked a return visit next year. My 2013 trip will be in to Romania which includes 3 days on a boat going around the wetlands of the Danube Delta

Cheers

A lot of really great detail. 15 is my favorite though. The reeds finish off the shot.

Many thanks for the replies. The marsh harrier in photo 15 was quite frustrating as it was up and down the reeds for most of the day to the right hand side of the hide. As all the hides are fitted with special one way glass and if the angle is too acute you cannot focus or get sharp photos. After several attempts I managed to get a couple of Marsh harrier photos. The glass has its benefits but also some disadvantages.

Cheers

Rich
