p.1 #1 · D700's flooding the market

Since I'm a noob, I'm hoping it is ok to post the same message both here and at the Cafe. I know there are lots of readers who are on both boards. This is my first post here although I have been reading this forum for over a month.

I'm seeing just a TON of D700's for sale in the used areas. The prices haven't come down much in the last month, but they must I would think, right?

i'm in the market for one, but not in any hurry. What is the reason for this? Did the D600 come out today for pre-ordering or something? Are there that many people upgrading to the D800?

I'm just curious why the large numbers suddenly.

My SWAG, Silly Wild A----- Guess, is that the d700's you're seeing are from folks that have probably upgraded to the d800 and find that they no longer want/need the d700. Lots of folks don't own/use more than 1 camera.

Kerry, that makes perfect sense, but the D800 has been out for some time now and suddenly there is this influx of D700's, so I thought maybe there was some factor unknown to me. If the D600 comes out truly at around $1500-1800, I would think used D700 prices would have to plummet. Thanks! b

IMO, whether or not the d700 used market price goes down significantly, is going to depend greatly on the capability of the new camera. In the past, the only time used prices dropped like a rock, was when the new body was cheaper and "better" at the same time, like the d2x when the d300 came out.

If the d600 doesn't have the performance and feature list as good as or better than the d700, I rather doubt that used d700 prices will drop much. The cheaper the d600 is, the less capable it will be and the more desirable the d700 will be to some folks, keeping the used prices up. Again, that's just my guess.

I think it is both the D800 effect (no that availability seems to have loosened up a bit) and the anticipation of a D600 and selling bodies before they take a hit.

I'm not sure the second piece is entirely sound logic, but whatever.

As for whether or how much the D600 will affect D700 prices, you could look at how the D7000 hit the D300s. It doesn't seem to me it has dragged it down significantly - they seem to be in the same range as they have been for the last year or so. (Where the D7000's are drifting down as low as $800-$850).

Yes the D800 owners are able to let go of their units now.
But now with the D800 out the D700 prices still haven't gone down down much because the D800 prices are that much more. And the D700 remained the "cheap" way to get full frame. And the D600 anticipation probably is playing in part of release of D700's but they might get burned like they did when they sold in anticipation of the D800 that took another 6 months to materialize due to the unforeseen circumstances so there's not really any super sale prices.

1000 USD will happen eventually, probably after D600, if it will be what its supposed to be and be good.. Otherwise it will probably hold its value in future. Nikon doesnt have exactly plenty of FF bodies, even SH. D700 is like 5Dc.. and even that isnt exactly cheap today.

We're in the market for another D800, but if D700 comes are a 'too good to miss' price I'd be more than happy to pick up a D700 instead.

OTOH, it would probably be worth waiting for the D600 .....

We use the D700 and D800 side by side. Sometimes I prefer the shots from the D800, sometimes from the D700. I do fine that the D700 sometimes has a better AWB and exposure over the D800, but the D800 had a much more malleable raw file (at least 2 stops either way).

My guess is that more D700 cameras are appearing simply because those folks who've been waiting for months to take delivery of their D800s are finally getting them. Few folks will keep the D700 after the latest and greatest arrives. It may be that folks selling them are unrealistic in their pricing, but I wouldn't count on the D600 to render the D700 useless. Many of us are uninspired by 36 megapixels and totally uninterested in video, so the D700 still looks like the premiere camera that it has always been. I already own one so I'm hardly waiting for the price point to drop to $1,000. I simply don't need two of them. I've also shot with the D800 and concluded it is not the second coming... It is a fine camera with excellent dynamic range but it is not a "must have" camera. If I buy one it will likely be because the D700 gave up the ghost...

I'm currently selling off some stuff to fund a D700 purchase in the not too distant future....i'll spend up to $1,700 depending on clicks and condition....Selling my D300, a sigma lens....etc....i think it's a good time to get into one, i for one am glad they're flooding the market....it's still a killer camera, and somehow i feel the quality control was/is better than than recent Nikon offerings....

Just to give ya'll an idea of the realistic going rate here on FM.

I had two D700's, and also own a D7k. I thought I'd give up one of the D700's for now, as I'd like to see what comes out next month and not loose my a$$ selling it if I'd wait any longer.

I sold a pristine, two owner unit with 6100 clicks. $1600 net to me (I paid for the shipping, which was $30.) So I ended up netting $1570. It was a GREAT deal for the buyer, and a fair price for me as well. I made a great deal when I bought it early this year, so the loss was minimal.

What's funny is, I posted it yesterday thinking it would take a while to sell, seeing as the board is FLOODED with them. It took less than two hours to seal the deal! Amazing..... I can't explain that one.

On the other hand, my second D700 I bought NEW from an authorized US seller about four months ago for $2200. That one I'll take to the grave with me before letting it go as low as I did the first one!

Just an FYI....

That, and I LOVE the D700 files! It really is a great camera if anyone is on the fence thinking about getting one. Do it!
