I bought a used slightly used 5DIII and a used 100-400...Here's my first shots with them.
I don't have the eyes that some younger folks have but I'm happy with the camera and lens.
First is full frame
Second is cropped no sharpening
Third sharpened.

I see no evidence of vignetting on your full frame shot at 400mm and f/5.6. Do you have peripheral illumination correction enabled for .jpg's or do you shoot RAW and correct with software?
I ask because I shot my 100-400 with my 5D2 this weekend, and wide open at f/5.6 and 400mm with no correction showed noticeable corner shading. I'm thinking I have just been spoiled by shooting crop sensors w/ my 100-400...
My first 100-400 (2005) was good on my 5D and then 5D2. Got a new 100-400 (2012) beginning of this year which was then very good on the 5D2, but when I got the 5D3, the 100-400 became excellent, didn't know there was so much still in that lens, so 5D3 magic transformation, don't care how.

I shot RAW but didin't do any corrections. Honestly I wasn't aware of peripheral illumination correction.
I also think that the performance of the 100-400 changes with changing light. It's perfomance dops off dramatically as the amount of ambient light decreases. Our 100-400 is brilliant with wildlife subjects that are back-lit, side-lit and front-lit, but as soon as the ambient light decreases, the warts come out.
I'm not sure that the 5D3 offers some magic mojo for this classic lens,... I'm curious about how the pair will perform when shooting darker subjects like an elk, bear or bison as the sun sits low on the horizon.
Love the lens, but I grab my 300 f2.8 on every shoot possible!

They look great Rod. Looks like you got a really sharp copy and it's playing nicely with your new 5DIII. I'm going to have to checkout the Firmware update someone mentioned.
