I also think that the performance of the 100-400 changes with changing light. It's perfomance dops off dramatically as the amount of ambient light decreases. Our 100-400 is brilliant with wildlife subjects that are back-lit, side-lit and front-lit, but as soon as the ambient light decreases, the warts come out.
I'm not sure that the 5D3 offers some magic mojo for this classic lens,... I'm curious about how the pair will perform when shooting darker subjects like an elk, bear or bison as the sun sits low on the horizon.
Love the lens, but I grab my 300 f2.8 on every shoot possible!
