Back when I went to Hawaii, I had a range of lenses from 24mm to 300mm. If I had to do it all over again, I would take my 24-70 and 70-200/2.8L IS II.... I have made many landscapes and panoramas with the 70-200, stitching together 5-20 shots. Fantastic resolution. The wider lens is great for people shots and events (hula dancing, luau, etc.).

I was in Maui last year (with my wife and 2 year old), so I know where you're coming from. I brought my 5DII, 24-105, 28, 50 and 70-200 F4L IS. Almost everything was with the 24-105, and 75% under 28mm. I really needed a 17-40, which I just picked up for my trip to the big island next month.

Bottom line, I would leave the 70-200 at home (used it twice I think) and go as wide as you can. My suggestion, 24 and 50 (or 85, can't remember if you had that one)

When I was in Hawaii, I had my 16-35 glued to my 35mm. I was constantly at 16 or 35. Nothing in between. Going off your list, I'd really say the 24 for sure. You'll find yourself backing up to get as much of the scene in frame as possible. Then I'd take a 50 because I love the focal length and 35mm is too close to 24 to really be useful when packing light.

trust me (and the others who say):

leave the big white at home (70-200)

I can't think of anything you would shoot with it as a tourist (as opposed to a working pro over here).

Aloha

back from the trip few days ago. I went back on my word and took the 70-200 instead. It helped for the luau (since it was on a stage, didn't get to do the Laihana one as it was all booked). Also helped with the kids at the beach so I didn't have to chase them, but it was heavy to bring. The reason I switched back to the 70-200 was because I was going to bring the 135 + a 1.4TC. Then realized with those two combined, wasn't much of a weight/size savings.

Anyway, I brought the 24Lii. Definitely would have helped to have a 17-40, 16-35, or even 24-70 instead but I was fine with the 24L. At times, I wished I had my 35L and other times I wished I had something wider, but I didn't. But I'm glad I brought the two that I did.

24 over 35 was definitely a good choice. The far end is a toss up. For family vacation photos with occasional landscapes, a single zoom would be perfect. Maybe I should have sold my 24-70 AFTER the trip =/.

Strange, when we went to Honolulu, the most used lens was my 70-200 2.8 on my 1D4. I took the Tokina 11-16, 50 1.4, Sigma 24-60 2.8 and the 70-200.

The order of usage was 1) 70-200, 2) Tokina 11-16, and 3) Sigma 24-60, Sigma 50

That's not too surprising. If you're just visiting Honolulu than the photo opportunities are more restricted. The rest of Oahu is very scenic, especially the rocky panoramas on the East side, where a wide angle seems like the logical choice.
The OP went to Maui where wide angle lenses are more appropriate because of the wide vistas and waterfalls.
Kauai and the Big Island are also similar.
I have to say that some landscapes call for the use of a telephoto, so not taking one seems to be a restriction also. I typically prefer wide angle for scenic shots, but there are occasions when a sunset needs a telephoto.

Thanks for the clarification. We loved Hawaii, it was a dream of my wife's, and now that we have gone, we would love to go again and hit the other islands. One week simply wasn't enough to even see Oahu.

Pics we have shared before from our anniversary trip...

When my wife and I did our honeymoon to Kauai, Maui and Oahu I took a 5D2 and my most used lens was the 17-40. I used the 85mm for a few portraits and landscape shots but there were quite a few occasions where I would have liked to have something longer with me.

We plan to go back for an anniversary trip in the future and I will definitely be bringing the 17-40 (or equivalent) again...but also something longer that is relatively light and compact like the 70-300 or 100-400. That range is handy for some interesting landscape and wildlife opportunities.

I am a non working amateur who has lived on oahu for 35 years...agree with gheller unless you want to shoot surfers, you want wide and you want something to isolate DOF...one of the visual treasures here, often overlooked, are faces...and if you do want to shoot surfers, dont bother cause heller already has that extremely well covered...if you are on oahu dont miss Ka Iwi coast and Makapu Lighthouse lookout on east side....aloha....peter
